So after doing some mild research it seems very possible this helicopter did not do that on accident

As someone flying from Iowa to DCA on Monday...not exactly a great feeling that the best our president can muster is "This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!"

i went to bed early thinking i’d be a good boy and get some good rest and i woke up at 4 thinking ziggy barked only to find her asleep and then i was unable to fall back asleep for like two hours

I don’t think the helicopter did it on purpose. I’m thinking what happened was they had the other aircraft on final for runway 1 in sight, thinking it was the aircraft landing 33.

When you are on a collision course with another aircraft, they do not appear to move in your windshield at all, so at night, with their night vision goggles on, it is very likely that they had no idea they were about to hit the jet, as I’m sure the goggles themselves obscure your field of view somewhat. I want to believe they weren’t just lying and saying they had the jet in sight, but nobody will ever know.

Unfortunately there’s nothing the jet could have done. That low, you are at minimums and focused 100% on landing/airspeed, not looking to your right/left, and I doubt they would have even seen a Blackhawk since they are made to be basically invisible at night.

100% this is on the helicopter/military/FAA, but they always find a way to blame us airline pilots. They will never tell the military they were in the wrong/need to change.

Flying seems crazy as hell man

haven’t there been tons of crashes (maybe further in the past) where it’s like “the pilot became disoriented and flew upside down for 5 miles” lol

Usually that is general aviation (think smaller planes), and people not rated to fly into clouds, but inadvertently flew into a cloud, and became disoriented. GA is about as safe as riding a motorcycle statistically

 

The other annoying thing is the military is on their own frequency talking to the tower, so our aircraft can only hear tower’s side, and heard “pass behind”, so they have to assume they are safe to continue. I am worried they will also blame the controller, when they did nothing wrong here either

What research could you have done in the less than 12 hours that leads you to believe this was on purpose? Even the top comment from the aviation subreddit from 9 hours ago says pretty much what Zach said this morning
