Haven't noticed that before but it doesn't sound as "metallic" as it does on St. Anger. Idk the snare just bugs me so much on that specific song.

    I do lol

love that Elliott album but that’s a ringy ass snare

I kinda wonder if it's fear as much as it's complacency

Like the "well x y and z worked so what if I made x part 2" and then there's no inspiration behind it

Or the opposite, being so afraid of repeating x y and z that when you make something new it misses bigtime

I feel like fear resulting in overthinking is a contributing factor as well

Labels pressure them to put out more music asap rather than being naturally inspired probably

Was just about to come back and say "label interference likely plays a part as well"

I was actually going thru some 80's hair metal groups later albums and some of them are actually pretty fantastic. Some of them fell off a cliff but some actually have some really good deep cut records. Just interesting to me how some just don't ever put out much good music after a couple records.

These Days by Bon Jovi might be a top 10 album of mine right now.

Also I would say "life" is a factor as well, they may not all live in the same area anymore, have kids etc, not in the same headspace as when you're younger. The writing process may not be what it was in earlier years.

I have heard that "you have your whole life for your first record and 6 months for your second". I feel like that's started to shift a little bit though now? It seems like there's bigger gaps between albums now then there used to be.

Not to mention success results in egos which can result in clashes between band members that definitely impacts the process

The latter is very clearly on display if you watch Linkin Parks Making of Minutes to Midnight. They were so terrified of making anything like the first two recorded that some of the stuff on that album I think suffers from what you're saying.

I really like the topic though, I ponder that at times too depending on the band

I think about it with Green Day a lot. The fall off in quality of albums is so noticable but when they play live, they haven't lost a step. So many groups are like that. I'm always curious what makes them lose that edge they had creatively.

I think it'd be terrifying being tied to a specific sound though, I definitely understand the desire to pivot hard in another direction.

I've kinda noticed too recently how many more side projects there are for bands I like, and how it's seemed to help maintain the quality of the "main" band. they can get those ideas out in other avenues.

    could just be coincidence though

    It probably varies

I like the Green Day side project albums I've heard but their more recent albums are still pretty ass

But yeah it's likely genre dependent in general because there's certain genres where when you get older it just feels weird to make "authentic" music in

Like (we all know now just how garbage of a person he is but for the sake of music discussion) Jay-Z can't exactly make Reasonable Doubt again, it'd kinda sound like a joke if he embraced what made that so good and tried to make it now as an old rich guy

i was mostly joking but i do think there’s something to songwriters just having a certain amount of songs in them. also once you experience a decent amount of success your perspective is inevitably going to shift, which leads the songs to come from a different place. playing live doesn’t effect that.

Remember when “scene” bands would release a banging first album and then second one was filled with songs about being on tour?
