Right and I’m saying it’s not the same on both sides so don’t treat it the same lol. When Matt is arguing with me about a place I’ve been and he hasn’t that’s kinda his bad lol

It's literally one of the most well known and revered art and museum cities in the world. Also saying the culinary options are lacking is ABSURD

You went well over a decade ago now, was that where you also had very little money and spent little time there? Surely not enough time to experience the vast majority of things so it wouldn't make sense to speak like you know everything about it. I'm not saying I do either, but I also don't visit somewhere once and pretend I did everything there is.

I’ve *been* there sir, the food wasn’t really that great except for the fresh herring stands. I’ve been to their famous art museum. It’s absolutely not more impressive than the Smithsonian.

You’ve been to Baltimore for 3 days and the Netherlands for 0. I clearly know more of what I’m talking about than you do so why do you take it upon yourself to argue with my experience

Even if I’m dead wrong it’s certainly not you who’s qualified to tell me that lol

when did I do that? I’m literally just speaking from my own experience about what I thought

No, it’s me being tired of you arguing with me when I’m talking about something I’ve experienced and you haven’t

it’s dumb, baseless, and pointless, quit doing that lol. You’re not the Ken Jennings of World Jeopardy

And you're making sweeping and incorrect statements about it.

You need to realize your experience is not everything and there may have been a lot you did not experience.

I’m making subjective statements about it

How “good” a city is isn’t objective lol

Even with that factored in, Italy and parts of France jumped out as “you’re not gonna have this experience in America”. Netherlands didn’t and I spent longer there

And genuinely Fells Point looks a lot like that part of the world, idk what to tell you. The architecture / vibe of the Netherlands generally isn’t that different. It feels old and charming in the same sort of “old Western World port city” way. A lot of it was probably built around the same time as Baltimore was and most of who built Baltimore is middle-European immigrants

No but the things in a city are. Saying it lacks in culinary options is an absurd statement to make

The food there was not that good. The food in the UK was also not that good. In Italy and France every meal stood out. If we’re talking about other European countries I’d quite literally prefer the diversity of cuisine here

Yeah saying the food in the UK isn't good is also absurd. Might have been user error. If I say the food in LA is not good, you are very welcome to tell me that's a ridiculous statement haha

Idk, it’s my take that the US does international food well even if our own cuisine is generally fattening and low brow and people who are (understandably) negative about America right now take that aspect of this country for granted

  23. CarpetElf

    That's another statement entirely

When I’m judging the food of a country I’m not judging the best shit they have. I’m judging the average realistic, affordable, commonplace meal they have.

In Italy, the most basic everything tastes incredible. You can just be eating pasta with sauce or greens with a vinaigrette and it’s apparent throughout their food culture and how sacred the process of making food is to Italians, that the quality of simple ingredients there and the way balanced recipes are honored is very specific to their country.

I didn’t get that vibe in the Netherlands and I didn’t get much pride in local cuisine in the sense of, here’s all these places to try great Dutch food. You mostly see like, average pizza places and shit like that in Amsterdam lol. That doesn’t scream strong food culture to me. We can have different criteria and that’s okay.
