this does not mean every conspiracy theorist on TikTok should be believed, of course there’s tons of bad information out there and no actual research, but it does imply there were some truths to things like the Gaza bombings that our government was trying to hide from us

I think while social media definitely is very effective at preying on folks’ addictive tendencies, that void would just be replaced by something else if it ever truly went out of style. Think about how addictive people are with TV shows, video games, gambling, how many people still buy stuff from commercials and get hooked on fringe political bullshit etc etc there’s always a way to make money off of people’s attention spans

I think social media connecting everyone doesn’t create the problem so much as it exposes and exacerbates a problem that is already there because it removes barriers to access the type of content people already seek out anyway. And provides a sense of social belonging and an illusive feeling of your own voice having power in the process. Those are all things that facilitate human social behavior in general, both the good and the bad, and we can’t take away the idea of social media exaggerating folks’ addictive tendencies without also taking away for example an artist or entertainers’ access to audiences who support them that they’d never reach otherwise.

To use a personal example, I don’t really have a way of staying in contact with folks who like Terrain and might be interested to stay up on our shows and releases outside of social media. If I didn’t have social media it would be way harder to keep up with all those contacts because 1) asking for someone’s phone number and expecting them to keep yours just cause they liked your performance is too personal and is creepy and uncouth and not realistic when you’re talking about literally thousands of people 2) no one uses email the same anymore cause there’s so much goddamn spam that it’s hard to even delete it all, mailing lists are a thing of the past and reading emails requires too much effort for somebody you met once even if you liked their content, so what. Without social media my only option is really “90% of people forget about or lose contact with my music mere months after I perform”… with social media it’s more like “I can send a 3 sentence IG message to 50 bands I like and get support acts for a whole tour, I can pay $20 to promote one post and everyone who likes us who is active on IG over that span of time gets a reminder of our upcoming shows, and people I met 7 years ago are still coming to shows and housing us on that tour”. That’s really huge and making a lot of peoples ambitions and talents come to fruition.

 

I am of the mindset that all social media should be banished and it has done irreparable harm to society at large and its negatives offset the positives

Eh, dont agree at all. Twitter was a super viable place, pre-Musk, for world and political news too, but it was also a cesspool of misinformation that has obviously gotten worse.

There's two things, in combo, that make TikTok uniquely bad. Its video heavy with an algorithm that prioritizes content very differently than most social media apps (who use a follower->send followed content + you might also like model), meaning people spend INSANE amounts of time on it (like, 3-4x as much as FB/Twitter/Insta). And for the "national security" reasons, its controlled by a country we are in active competition with, who have wildly different values, and who we hold no leverage over if they start tweaking the algorithm to manipulate users. See: the TikTok people who went to RedNote and were spouting pure CCP propaganda.

Now, all social media is bad. Meta and Twitter in particular are terrible. We absolutely fail to police them as we should, in large part because they pay off politicians not to. But we can police them, fine them, control them if they become too problematic. And that was the point of the TikTok ban; that leaving a global foe a direct line to our citizens is not a smart choice without significant guardrails

 

The fact that they just passed the TikTok ban in like 2 days without really saying exactly why is also a good reason for people to be pissed and is a terrible political approach.

Its no accident that when I deleted the FB app off my phone, I spent the next few weeks in some of the most peace I had felt in a while. Same for deleting Twitter off my phone. Now I have them for when Im drinking and want to go start some shit with people under burner accounts.

 

Just dropped off a plane full of Bills fans in Buffalo. One Ravens fan on board and I told him I hope they win and had some people boo me. Can’t wait for them to lose and the Allen-for-MVP talk to finally die.

 

I know the vote is already in or whatever for MVP but whoever loses this game will be the MVP winner and people will have opinions about it.

I genuinely don’t get how anyone thinks Allen is deserving. He isn’t even the best player at his position.

If you HAVE to give him something, give him OPOY, but I’d rather Saquon receive that one.

I meant that I think the voting is already done and if they voted Lamar then the bills are gonna win and vice versa cause that’s how the universe works.

I have been tapering my drinking a lot and haven’t kept it stocked the last few months. Definitely drink a lot less now and trying to be more healthy this year. Might try to stick with getting a beer or two when going out to dinner or something (which doesn’t happen a lot) and if I need a drink at home go gin and diet tonic or seltzer.
