re: Tik Tok, I think I see where Josh is coming from (yikes). The constant addiction for these types of apps is largely bad for society. We have all become so obsessed with content that it’s ruining our psyche a bit and our ability to think for ourselves. That said, I also think they’re good tools for sharing information that mainstream media doesn’t cover like genocide and the exploration of workers in third world countries. I’m also a hypocrite because I too get sucked into content, but I am trying to be much better about it and put down the phone and taking up other hobbies that don’t involve screens.

If we can figure out a better balance to all of that we’ll be much better off, but I’m afraid that is unlikely to happen because the entire business model of these apps is for us to get sucked into content for that serotonin hit. I think we can at least start by making public spaces more inviting again and certainly giving young people spaces where they can hang out IRL again

 

TikTok being shut down will definitely make a big dent in misinformation. There's a part of me that wants them to actually go through with taking out Section 230, making content providers liable for what gets posted, and all of social media just collapses. In truth, a site of about this size (forums, sure some reach, but nearly impossible to massively influence millions) is probably about as big as anyones reach should be

Taking away a communication channel that millions of young people used for their primary source of info for politics, awareness, Gaza, Ukraine, other global issues, etc. to then be left with Zuckerberg or Musk owned platforms does stink.

 

As long as Facebook and Twitter exist, misinformation will run amok lol

 

I’m not a user of anything other than instagram occasionally so I’ll let everyone else decide if this is bad or good

 

I’m all for social media companies needing to be held liable for what is posted on their platform(s), but I think your assessment of Tik Tok is a bit off re: misinformation. Yes, all of the social media sites have their share of misinformation, but Tik Tok was actually one of the few bright spots among them. This is where many people were getting their news on what’s been happening in Gaza and other places around the world where the news had been suppressed elsewhere. That’s a pretty big reason on why they wanted to shut it down imo
