This was easily his most noteworthy game of his career. Legit showed some flashes.

For the safety to even get down there that quick he has not not be respecting BTJ’s deep route. If your hips are the wrong way when a speed receiver is about to be level with you, he’s gone. That is just a fact of football. You cannot turn around and accelerate to a sprint instantly, it’s not humanly possible, hips gotta be facing the right way to stop a speed demon like BTJ

His hips weren't facing the right way because he read the play. He's the deep safety do you think he's just going to let BTJ go by him with no help if he thought the play could go there

Missed the Richardson discussion so report me for bringing it back up. I think a lot of great points on both sides were made. I don’t think there’s an inherently right or wrong answer to it.

I’m not going to sit here an act like I’ve watched every game of his career and broke down the film because I haven’t, but I do largely find it to be shortsighted to bench him like this when the team should have known what they were getting themselves into when they drafted him. Also certainly worth noting all the times his supporting cast has let him down.

However, I also understand that taking yourself out, even for a play, is a TOUGH look. I mean, if Hurts or Herbert or Goff or Dak took themselves out for even just one play because they were “tired,” it would very likely be a national talking point.

Culturally, though, I have mixed feelings because, on one hand, yeah, maybe Flacco gives you the best chance of winning right now and keeps the other guys in the locker room happy. However, if you need to start 39-year-old Joe Flacco to keep players in your locker room happy, you’ve got a larger issue at hand than just Anthony Richardson.

It quite literally happens all the time lol. People KEEP underestimating his deep speed

I think the safety took a big risk following Trevor’s eyes over his assignment, and Trevor should’ve looked him off or pump faked and made him pay, but instead he locked onto his first read even as the safety crept forward and discouraged the post route / opened himself up to getting burned deep. Bad read all day imo. He shouldn’t have telegraphed the throw

it’s not always “the safety must have played it perfectly” a lot of times safeties take bigger risks against less consistent QBs and it’s up to the QB to prove to them it’s not a smart move and be a step ahead

He didn't have time to pump fake, he was in the end zone. Yes, Trevor is to blame. So is Kirk and Doug/Press, and huge credit to Xavier. All anyone is saying is its not as simple as you're making it seem.

I’m not saying it’s simple situation overall - but I am saying Trevor missed an easy solution to it that could’ve scored instant points and a top 10 QB would’ve.

that’s the difference between good QBs and average ones, the good ones see the defense cheating toward their tendencies and keep their mind open to pivoting to something that wasn’t in the plan when a defense gets too ahead of themselves. It should’ve been in his pre snap read to watch the safety and make sure he moves backward and respects the go route immediately after the snap before choosing to go to the post

I don’t know for sure but based on all the research I’ve done, I would tthink that IS the read - if the clearout doesn’t work and the safety doesn’t back up, don’t throw the post

I actually bet the reason Xavier took that risk is because of film study, we call that play a lot and always target the primary and have thrown multiple interceptions on it. He took a risk knowing our tendencies and it paid off. So it was also a great play by the safety but we should understand the nuance that that kind of risk does not pay off against very good QBs and he coulda got burned if Trev was more on his game

Look at the picture. Look which way McKinney is facing and which way BTJ Is going. You’re telling me that’s not a touchdown?

When you hit a mothafucka, you hit that mothafucka Prestigious

BTJ set him up inside which made him think it was a smart call to chase the post cause his deep guy’s already supposedly heading that way, but then he leaned outside the opposite direction McKinney was heading. BTJ been killing people with that all year

Correct. Thats the second he throws the ball.

Then what you said last isn’t true - he didn’t check which way the safety was going before throwing

You wanna talk about timing and anticipation? Well, in that photo he still has a fairly clean pocket and a safety in zone heading the opposite direction of a deep route . Correct anticipation would be reading the safety and throwing whichever way he doesn’t go

And put it like this: year 2, sure ain’t knocking Trevor too hard. Year 3, I’ll criticize but forgive. But he is in “I just got paid like a top franchise QB” year and that’s specifically the type of shit I wanna see him elevating. Knowing QUICKLY to goto the second read and be aggressive when the defense is that early / anticipatory about taking away your first

  24. CarpetElf

chorus's #3 oklahoma city comets fan Prestigious

He literally scored a game tying TD on a two minute drill with 0 starting WRs what is that if not elevating

We can all see why Trevor made the mistake but we shouldn’t be excusing that anymore. Yes, very good QBs make that anticipation read to their second target even backed up inside their own 5 if there’s no free rushers. They might miss the throw but they still show the defense “you better stay on your responsibilities and not try to guess too much” or else they’ll give it up next time.
