At a certain point I just think the #4 pick is spent, and you WANT to get the #4 pick type value out of him but at a certain point you're spending more over time just to see what you can get out of him when you know it's not there, when you could cut the loss and look elsewhere

I know a lot of this is likely bias, I think Richardson seems cool in general but I really don't see him ever being a good QB and that may be influencing me being so ready for the Colts to move on from him, but yeah

 

My argument/stance isn't that he's entitled to a long leash, it's more the Colts knew, or at least should have known, what they were getting into when drafting AR. AR was a young QB, who showed crazy upside with no consistency in college (his only real season playing he was only completing 53.3% of his passes). Everyone knew he needed reps to become more consistent and reach his potential. If the idea is benching him a couple games to get his head right or something, sure, but he's not going to improve without real reps.

 

And this is where I'm at with it. I think they're in over their heads and need to get out from it.

Obviously Ballard/Steichen should be trying to do what's best for themselves but I think they didn't know what they signed up for with Richardson and thought they could fix him and quickly realized they can't

 

Using your Josh Allen example as the comparison point, if AR gave us 4 games at or above 100 rushing yards in starts 8-12, I don’t think this is a conversation. If he started this season off with a massive jump in completion % at the start of season 2 and the team started 6-2, I don’t think this is a conversation. “Bad” is such a deceiving term, because it describes both of them in the first couple years of their career, but eliminates the nuance that it’d take a massive step forward for Richardson to hit “Josh Allen late first year/early second year” level of bad.

Throwing in a bunch of what will almost certainly be bottom 5 1st round picks just feels like when you throw in guys you're gonna cut anyway into a fantasy trade.

 

and yeah probably. We’re just, by some mix of bad injury luck, player incompetence, coaching incompetence, and supporting cast incompetence, at a worse place a season and a half later with him than we were on draft day, so at some point the conversation moves from there.

I feel strongly that the bar that a second year QB needs to be at is league average at the end of their second season, and I personally would have preferred he get the other 8 games to get there because I have no real skin in the game on who stays or goes with this team’s power structure, but it does not seem like he was trending to that point

i don't think he ever gets traded. i think he wants to be a dirk type. but if he does, it's going to be an unreal return that we haven't seen in a long time.

The problem with this type of QB discourse is that there isn’t one specific correct way to do it. Yeah, Josh Allen got to keep playing and it turned out well. But there are countless examples of it not being successful. Same with the other route, some guys that sit are able to step in and be successful. Others don’t work out.

Richardson was over-drafted. Extremely raw and a clear project. Why is he going top 5? People were excited about his athleticism - and the entire league seems to have brain rot when it comes to QBs. Most guys who are extremely raw and projects don’t start super early. But his draft position creates that obligation. And I think it just warps the perception of the entire process. He is so far from being a good starter. I don’t think putting him in positions to repeatedly fail benefit him right now.
