It’s been known Shad might not fire Baalke right away. If they interview Ben Johnson this week and they really want to hire him, Baalke is getting the can.

Am I the only one who kinda thinks this is a bad plan

Like Ben Johnson is a very good playcaller but you're gonna let him have his say GM? And if not you're gonna hire a GM totally independent of him? I feel like firing both and getting the new GM in place is so much more paramount (and should've happened way earlier obviously). Just seems like Ben Johnson is getting crowned SO early and getting a lot of say in something he doesn't quite have the experience in

(And obviously that might not be the final plan, just saying in the hypothetical that it is)

I get you haha, yeah I know you've been banging the drum for them to go for a while so not saying you're endorsing it. I'm just really not sure about Ben Johnson yet

You’re not the only one, but thank you for articulating it in a better way than I could. Keeping Baalke, hiring Johnson, then firing Baalke for Johnson just reeks of a bad idea even if Baalke should be fired regardless of if they hire Johnson or not

Both of those coaches had prior head coaching experience to some extent

I did think of New England as well but I think what BB showed in his development of Cleveland and management of that coaching staff showed enough to prove that they could take that risk

Yeah idk if I think Johnson should be given the keys to choose his GM right away. But I also don’t understand why Shad can’t see that Baalke is terrible and should fire him as well, clearly he is not equipped to make that decision himself.

Yeah and I've just been thinking a lot lately about how I actually feel about Ben Johnson. I know this sounds kinda out of nowhere, but it's been on my mind as we talk about slam dunk HC hires that went south sooner or later (Freddie Kitchens, Bill O'Brien). And that's not to say Ben Johnson should be damned either of course, he's proven a lot at his current position and deserves the shot! Just maybe not THAT much of the shot where he's running every aspect of the organization.

It's always interesting how people say that about coaches but never about GMs. Like, the guy in charge of the team is almost certainly going to be a first time GM too.

However what I said above is not as bad as just keeping Baalke wtf

I mean you can say the same thing about a first time GM. We’re just talking about one scenario currently.

I also think that moving up from a different front office position to GM, where you're going from working with money+metrics to working with money+metrics, makes a lot more sense than going from playcaller to a more pure people management situation and having to all of a sudden learn to do the Dan Campbell thing and then all of a sudden you're also choosing staff above you AND below you

But I mean what do I know, I'm a guy in a work chair, I have 0 experience in any NFL job
