Any instance where a team’s GM and HC do not see eye to eye on the plan gives me cause for concern. See: Jags, last year’s Eagles (TBD on if bad habits return next year)

Obviously, they have two different jobs and GMs tend to have more job security, leading to HCs making decisions for the week ahead and GMs making decisions for the future, but there is a middle ground where the two can absolutely come together

It reminds me alot of the early Caserio as Texans GM years

difference is they have Drake Maye before the roster is really fleshed out and Mayo is a better coaching prospect than near-retirement Lovie Smith and David Culley

Well those Texans teams barely fielded an NFL roster that couldn’t disguise the fact that they were tanking for two straight years and exploited two different head coaches as a result. I think the Pats’ situation is different. At least they had a plan for competence. It just didn’t work out

Besides QB, this Pats roster is just as dogshit as those Texans teams lol

I’ve heard the QB matters a lot. Idk from where though

One team drafted a highly-touted rookie QB who has shown some promise while another held their predator QB for a high ransom whole trotting out Davis Mills

Two very different situations if you ask me

It does! But we’re also talking about a project QB who was always seen as needing time to develop, so with that context, the rosters are about equal

You can say the rosters are about equal. I’m saying that they had two different plans. The Texans handed out a bunch of one-year deals to veterans who would have been backups on most other teams while the Patriots handed out long-term extensions

Again, the season obviously didn’t go as planned for the Patriots, but I don’t think that means the Patriots shouldn’t have tried to be competent this year in hindsight

Imagine drafting Drake Maye and wasting a year or two because he’s supposedly a “project” who needs to develop, but your grand master plan to develop him is to follow the Texans 2021-2022 grand master plan to do so

You don’t think they tried to be competent this year with *checks notes* a WR named Booty and no semblance of an offensive line? Thats on the GM, not the coach

I can’t believe I’m out here defending a Pats coach. I need to take a long hot shower

They also prioritized bringing back Onwenu who, by all accounts, was considered a good player and one of the best impending free agent offensive linemen last year. One man doesn’t make an OL and I can’t speak to the quality of the other players, but I would rather have at least one good offensive lineman than none! They also took a couple swings at WRs in the draft and they missed. Oh well, that’s the draft for ya.

If the Pats want to can Wolf, they certainly can do so. It’s not like he did a good job either. I just don’t see what the benefit is to keeping Mayo aside from wanting consistency for Maye. “Maybe he’ll develop into a good coach!” Maybe he won’t!

Yeah I totally get it. You don’t wanna get stuck in the coaching carousel and I get that concern haha, it’s a gamble either way they choose lol

I just never agreed with hand picking Mayo years ago to be Bill’s successor. He hardly has held even a coordinator position, he had zero experience, and I just didn’t understand not even interviewing anyone at all or to just consider someone outside the organization. It was a confusing hire from the start. It’s not just him, I hated keeping Wolf as GM too. It was dumb to be a top 3 bottom team and to keep everyone BUT Bill.

And after year 1, they went from 3rd worst to first worst team. Mayo’s defense (his speciality) regressed to league worst, the offense with better QB play is just as bad, and every week he or players make dumb comments and have to spend the week walking them back. It’s a disorganized mess, and I literally don’t know what Mayo even does.

I don’t want to be stuck as a bottom of the league team and in a coaching carousel, but I also don’t believe in Mayo, Wolf, AVP, Covington, enough to run it back another year. I feel confident we’d be in the same spot this next time year. Ill take the gamble on clearing house and PRAYING Kraft doesn’t cheap out again and seriously tries to bring in the right people, but ya never know lol

By all means, it’s on Kraft more than anybody. Promoting from within on a bottom 3 team ain’t a recipe for success lol

Ben Johnson staying in Detroit would be equal parts funny and tiring

  23. I dunno what incentive he has really going to a dumpster fire franchise. He can continue to be one of the highest paid assistants and remain relatively anonymous knowing he has a shield in Campbell for any failures while continuing to get all the praise for the offense's success.

The thing that worries me about Mayo is:

    A) The media stuff. Dude just can not figure out how to convey a clear message.

    B) it’s not just that the roster is bad. It is. But even the decent players we had are regressing. Stevenson and Dugger look like shells of themselves and Onwenu is JAG right now.

And then you have to consider opportunity cost. It’s not just “does Mayo DESERVE to be fired.” It’s “is there a coach available that can help stabilize and build this thing up quicker, so we get the most out of Drake Maye.”

I don’t think you fire him just to do it, but I assume through back channels they have an idea of how Vrabel and Johnson and some of the other top tier candidates feel about the job and if the inkling is you can get one of them, I think you have to strongly consider it.
