Of all the maybes I listed, I think Callahan is the most likely to get canned

I don’t think there’s really any argument based on what he’s put on tape to keep Mayo other than “well it’s year 1” which is rough.

I don’t super want Vrabel though, but if I can get Ben Johnson I’ll drive Mayo to Logan myself.

I can see the Pats keeping Mayo if they want to keep things consistent with Maye going from year one to year two, but I can absolutely see them canning him and hiring someone with more experienced who can capitalize on Maye and the Pats’ situation

Maybe they could hire the current UNC head coach to build some kind of camaraderie with the QB, I wonder who that would be

    there is one way out

I had to look up which team Brian Callahan coaches.

It's okay, not sure that organization knows who they are either

Coaching hiring cycles are always so fun to look back on. Mayo was seen as a slam dunk at the time and now many want him fired

Like the Pats were always going to be bad this year. Maybe the expectation wasn’t 3 wins bad, but who cares. If you’re going to miss the playoffs anyways, 3 more wins doesn’t mean shit

  12. Steelers keep backing themselves into a corner regarding QBs. They’re gonna have to give Russ a deal even though he doesn’t deserve one. Then they gotta try to hit on a qb in the draft.

I’d probably go with fields since he’s cheaper and just be not very good again instead of giving Russ 3 years 100 mil or whatever. Not that cap means anything but fields is more fun.

He was NOT a slam dunk hire at the time lol - I didn’t want him at all and many people were hesitant to hire a defensive minded HC who hardly held a coordinator position.

They have to secure #1 pick, clear house, and hire the right guy. Maybe interview someone this time around????

The Steelers saw what the Bengals did all those years with Andy Dalton and were determined that they wanted the same, despite facing them twice a year every year

  16. The fact the Steelers are competitive since ben speaks a lot about the coaching and culture but at some point you just need talent. You can’t win with mid qbs and you need weapons. Pickens is not a WR1 and wouldn’t be surprised if he’s not on the team in the next year or two. Oline is still problematic and Arthur smith is boring.

  17. Anyway once the Steelers get bounced next weekend I’m all in on the Lions baby let’s go

Careful what you wish for Donnie cause this is how bad teams stay bad, hiring/firing coaches, rinse, lather, repeat with not enough time to give them a chance. I’m not saying Mayo is guaranteed to figure it out with time, but he was seen as a good hire by many people. It’s not like he was a Josh McDaniels hire where everyone knew from the start it was going to be a disaster (or really, any coach the Raiders have hired in the last 15 years). You can’t always expect a coach is going to turn things around in one season

Unless the Pats saw Mayo as a one year stop gap and absolute disaster this year they should probably keep him

Obviously probably not going to be the same but for context, I'm not sure people remember Dan Campbell was 12-21-1 through his first two coaching seasons

Some guys need time, difficult part is obviously building the roster in their image and allowing them to grow as a coach

Then there are the coaches like Doug Pederson who over performed year one and has been in sharp decline ever since. My point is, unless a coach has been egregiously bad (which Mayo hasn’t) you have to let it play out for more than one year

Not every team that fires a coach after one year or after a winning season or who has been largely good, but can’t seem to get his team over the hump is destined to become the Jets

Pat’s fire Mayo, Jets rehire Rex Ryan, Dolphins fire McDaniel and the Bills win the division the next 10 years but never win a Super Bowl because of lil Patty

The thing with Dan Campbell is that the Lions did start showing some positive signs at the end of his first season. I’m too far removed from the Patriots to know better, but my understanding is that Mayo hasn’t shown those signs

I said it about a week ago but I think GM is more important at this point for them than the coach, Wolf is probably more important at this point than Mayo if that makes sense

I did see those Wolf comments about Polk I think, and that did kinda seem like maybe there's a disconnect between Mayo and Wolf to a degree
