It's not magician work it's recognizing the expense or revenue in the period incurred/earned

 

In business school they literally taught me how to represent numbers in ways that look the best on your bottom line lol

I will say nonprofit accounting is a little janky, but you still need to have the money to back things up.

 

like they definitely taught you enough to where you could understand the mechanisms behind how accounting fraud happens

and how fine the line can be between legal ways of organizing the books vs illegal but subtle ways to hide stealing money or to fraudulently make your company look like its booming while making it difficult to audit

relax, I've never done any accounting lol and I would be the nerd who's got a very specific way of accounting to ensure that never happens

It was a long time ago spiffa i did not choose the accountant path i chose the "fuck business school" path lol

 

of course they weren't teaching me actual fraud in school lol, but it felt like i was being taught a mindset of "here's 1,000 different ways to exploit things" while at the same time I was also becoming less naive about how badly capitalism is exploiting things lol. It was just a whole vibe I was not into at that age and that level of idealism

 

And the way the program approached ethics and social responsibility was gross haha. They approached it like an obligation to do the bare minimum as to minimize the impact on your bottom line, and treated incredibly unethical business practices as "tough dilemmas" because they make a lot of money. And I'm like, no, Chiquita Banana should've shut down that plantation decades ago or been dissolved as a company lol

Very much "cut as many shady corners as possible as long as it's not against the law and doesn't piss off your shareholders"

 

but then I went to the same school for tech 10 years later and it was the opposite, they were like "here's everything tech is fucking up in society and we're going to mobilize this generation of info-sci graduates to be the ones to fight back against that"

much more my speed. Treat the ethical approach to tech and the legal battles of data privacy etc. as the most important thing you're learning in college, so everything they do in their careers is based in the context of correcting the things that are corrupt in the tech industry
