I saw a tweet that the mlb draft lottery is today and the royals have a chance at the #1 pick.

I know there's roughly 85 rounds to the mlb draft, how often do top picks actually pan out? and it's usually a few years down the line right?

I believe the draft is only 30 rounds now and yeah it usually takes guys 3 to 4 years at least to reach the MLB depending on whether they’re drafted out of HS or college.

Draft is a crapshoot, there’s just as many top pick busts as there are players drafted late that turn into stars.

Bottom line is baseball is hard and projecting how kids will turn out years down the line is difficult.

I gotta be honest keeping up with your organization's prospects seems exhausting

  11. i simply do not do it and then act like i am familiar and understand why people are excited when they get called up

it can be, but if you follow the team and its news you get to know the kids you actually need to pay attention to. idk who the fuck is playing 2B for the single A mets, and nor will i even think about it.

the only time fans ever actually care about prospects is at the trade deadline when you'd rather die of the plague than part ways with a 19 year old who *MIGHT* one day be a good ballplayer.

Yeah oftentimes it's a few years until draft picks develop. Then there is the odd prospect now and then that gets fast tracked due to skill or desperation by the team.

It's been about 10 years since we've seen a true bust (Mark Appel and then Brady Aiken), but there are some recent #1s like Mickey Moniak who stunk at first but are maybe figuring it out now.

The Rays picked Tim Beckham over Buster Posey for the #1 pick in 2008 and they've had catching problems ever since.

Kevin Kiermaier was selected in the 31st round (giving him a chip he will never take off his shoulder) and he wound up being one of the most valuable Rays in franchise history.

almost no one does except for like baseball card prospectors who are gambling that the cards they buy will be superstars

for normal fans, no one pays attention until someone is putting up crazy numbers like Acuña, Franco, etc did before call up
