Terry Francona says that too. His reasoning is that you don’t want to push guys for a random win in the middle of the season if it could potentially have a bigger negative impact down the line. The examples he used was putting a RPer in for a 3rd or 4th straight game or having a SPer extend himself for an extra inning throwing more pitches or resting his everyday players if they are a little banged up. He’s not saying to punt the game necessarily but need to look down the road and not just focus on 1 game.
