Maybe not the right place, but what are some of your favorites from this year that are available on streaming for free or cheap (not dropping $20 on a rental). Trying to catch up on things. Watched Passages today, it’s excellent.

Indiewire released their yearly poll of over 100 critics. This was overall the top ten:

I guess I have to suffer through another English Lanthimos film.

 

I want to be excited for Poor Things, but outside of Sacred Deer I'm also not loving Lanthimos' english movies.

 

It's my most anticipated film of 2024 lol.

I adore all of his films and this looks like it could potentially be his best.

 

There's a chance the best picture race this year will have no bad movies

 

we might even get through without the annual "random biopic nobody saw or thought about" acting nomination too

 

No disrespect to Colmon Domingo or Annette Benning (who are wonderful actors) but Rustin & Nyad might be those movies

 

were these in theaters?

 

Yeah, both of them had small screenings in my local cinema. Under The Light was a few months ago and Everything Under Control was at the start of the year for Chinese New Year.

 

Damn. I found Everything Under Control but Under the Light is one of 16 films from this year I don't have accounted for anywhere.

 

May December at number 1.

 

Weird a list of 20 doesnt include half the movies on the poster

 

Film Comment's yearly list is probably the best guide to the best art films of the year (Reverse Shot releases late into January).

I am excited to see Pacifiction so high. Serra's last two films were very good and contain a certain type of body horror but played as comedy.

 

The list looks good, wack poster choices.

 

I am surprised how little attention Priscilla has received. A comeback film for one of the most respected directors to emerge this century.

 

Priscilla is really great. Highly recommend

 

I don't think it's necessarily great but I'm definitely surprised that it's gotten basically no attention at all

 

Poor Things is now my favorite film of the year.
