My kinda-sorta-counterpoint (which isn't really a counterpoint but moreso adding nuance) is how many times have we seen a QB take a team to a Super Bowl and then fall off a cliff when we expect the offense to keep going there? Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, etc.

But I guess the counterpoint to that is that none of these QBs have to play Tom Brady or Peyton Manning so idk.

I still wouldn't take Lawrence over that QB because that's even more of a gamble but it's worth thinking about Hurts not being someone who continuously does this. He might and the state of the NFC seems to lean towards him continuing to compete, but it's worth acknowledging that he also couldn't.

I’m just ready to get hurt

I’m confident that Hurts is going to be good long-term so long as he still maintains his athleticism. Perhaps I’m diminishing him as a passer and processor, but I thought he was a better passer in 2021 than a lot of people gave him credit for, especially deep. He may not have the arm strength like a Josh Allen or Justin Herbert, but he does have the deep accuracy.

A lot of things also went right for the Eagles last year. All their offensive starters played in the Super Bowl, though Lane Johnson obviously played through a significant injury. I’m interested to see how Hurts responds to injuries around him, such as to AJ Brown or a couple offensive linemen. Does it bring out bad habits in him?

I also think people are too quick to forget about their priors. Last year, myself included, no one thought Hurts would be as good as he was. The majority of people thought the Eagles would use their 2023 firsts to get a QB to replace him. I’m not suggesting that Hurts is going to regress to his 2021 level of play, but there absolutely is a world that exists where his baseline moving forward is somewhere in between his 2021 and 2022 play where he’s a good QB with some notable shortcomings.

After giving him the extension they did, the Eagles are obviously banking on him maintaining his 2022 level of playing moving forward or getting even better. I’m hoping so too. He’s gotten better every single year of his career so he’s earned the benefit of the doubt, but progression isn’t always linear and there are several reasons to think that his play could regress a bit this season.
