I think they overperformed a bit at the start of this season but they’ve remained close to .500 this year which is actually a big improvement. The pirates have been bad because their front office made some really bad trades (Chris archer trade is basically a meme at this point) during their competitive window and they are just now starting to recover from it. Also they don’t spend money. I think they had some clubhouse issues at a point and Bryan Reynolds even requested a trade so things turned really sour before they gave him a decent bag. I think the young guys are now really buying into the new team philosophy with Shelton (also ex-Ray) now managing. They were smart to bring Cutch back as a veteran guy loved by the city and they’ve got a couple barely above replacement level vets taking up spots that should get occupied by some up and coming studs soon. They tanked long enough to acquire a lot of good prospects. Unfortunately O’Neil Cruz broke his leg or ankle while the Pirates were rolling earlier in the year. Suwinski has come out of seemingly nowhere and has been a beast though

they will never bring up those up and coming studs. They will keep them in the minors until they eventually trade them like they always do.
