It can backfire real bad though. We are lucky Ridley seems to like us enough to be loyal for a bit as long as we match his market value after taxes

 

Also lucky Ridley himself trusts us enough to help us with that draft pick and to actually communicate to us what other teams are offering him so we can match. No player about to hit free agency owes that to a team that didn’t sign him before the deadline. He really has no guarantee Baalke won’t just lowball him when the signing window actually opens when he could’ve just got a head start on seeking other offers. No one would bat an eye if he was like “give me the deal now or I’m gone, fuck a draft pick that’s your problem, not gonna sit around over a pinky promise when I could have a sure thing the second I pick up the phone”
