I get ya. I also came from a family where my sister very specifically seeked out a Persian and we went through that process growing up so I guess it's different for me than for a lot of people whose cat preference is "cat" haha

And I do have strong dog preferences so in that regard I get it (I really want one but we're not in the place for one right now)

I personally hate that we use the same work (adopt) and both children and animals. The animal adoption people can be so hardcore about it, but it’s definitely not the same as adopting a kid.
So I usually use “rescue” for animals.

 

Yeah I agree, I think some people are completely oblivious that they don't even know there are different cat breeds, they're all just "cat" lol.

I think it more has to do with cats are way more self-sufficient and are generally indoors 100% of the time and with a dog they're typically a more social animal so you think about their personality more

 

Fair. My experiences are the opposite. Never met anyone who went looking for a specific cat breed. just adopted the cat they liked the look of and how they acted at the shelter.

I too have strong dog preferences, but then I'm pickier about the breeds of dogs I could tolerate as a potential owner.

Once my current cat dies, it'll be dogs for here on out. Ive been cleaning litter boxes since I was a kid and Im done with that shit.

I don't think I'll ever end up having a dog just due to always wanting to have cats and always having cats that get excited about the idea of outside

But if my cats ever chill out in later age then I might, I'm just not banking on it. My oldest cat is 6 and she still acts like a kitten in terms of energy

There's so much nuance that goes into getting a dog and specifically what purpose they serve. I love my dog to death, don't get me wrong, but she has some pretty awful genetics when it comes to reactivity and aggression that don't generally come with well bred dogs. Obviously if you can, yeah adopt a dog, but there's a lot of factors in it and it isn't always one is better than the other.

Sometimes getting a dog from a breeder as ethically as you can is the best decision for you and it's silly to shit on people for it.
