I fully agree with this

a part you won’t agree with, is this is why I dislike the current league trend of paying WR3s so much. I get that a WR3 is basically a starter in the NFL but still, come on, depending on what kind of offense you run / depending on how average & replaceable that WR is, an outside linebacker or a safety or a DT can easily affect the game more

 

Like sure, WR1 is a “premium position”. It’s very rare someone has all the skills required to be a good team leading receiver who doesn’t have extreme ups and downs.

It is way too easy to replace WR2 and WR3 for those to get the same contract benefit though

 

29 year old Aaron Jones is like 400x time better than mattison last year, so that would be a huge improvement

 

We didn’t pay Kirk what we paid him cause we thought he was a 2. We paid him what we paid him cause (whether we were wrong or not) we thought he had 1 potential

but given that we were the only team who thought that highly of him, it influenced teams to pay actual WR1s $30M AAV and pay average replaceable wideouts $12-$20M AAV and now the market for WRs is all fucked up. I get the league hating us for that tbh. We even screwed our own selves, Gabe Davis would not cost that much without that precedent

I don’t, mainly because “good” and “replaceable” aren’t contradictory. Julian Blackmon is good — I’d like him back and the Colts have the money to do it. He is also replaceable — there’s a half dozen FA safeties out there who could conceivably replace him at a similar level; the right mid day 2 or early day 3 pick hitting as being immediately competent could also conceivably replace him

It seems fair to say that, among starters, Pittman and Blackmon operate in the same “good” space — not among their position’s elite but a solidly above average starter; they differ in that Blackmon is replaceable at that level and Pittman needs a franchise tag and a subsequent bag to stay and no one remotely questions that decision
