Was gonna say before the tweets came out about the actual details that the first 50% of basically any deal (aside from 3yr deals that are basically 1yr deals where there's 0 money guaranteed beyond year 1) is functionally guaranteed, you have to be uniquely terrible to not get paid that. And honestly, the team will panic (see: Brock Osweiler trade, which in retrospect is adorable) if it doesnt work out that way.

So, if you're gonna pay a top player a 3yr deal over 5yrs, might as well "guarantee" the first 3 years. And spread out that guarantee over 5yrs via signing bonus and it gets waived away as the cap goes up $20-30mil/yr

 

Also, again, why the Mahomes contract is the smartest QB deal any team has ever signed, both as a QB and a team, ever. Huge roster bonuses each year = "we can sign out DT to $25mil/yr in cap hits without blinking", because the QB can be restructured. And in years where you dont need that, you pay Mahomes like $60mil/yr.

Gotta imagine there is also cap savings in limiting Andy Reid's Hawaiian shirts and shrimp budget.

 

Also, HIGHLY recommend getting deeply drunk and rewatching Starship Troopers. The cast is insanely good, the graphics are uniquely bad, and the story makes sense 8 drinks deep
