Don’t engage with elf on fields. He’s the only person on the planet who thinks he’s any good. And he doesn’t understand cost benefit.

 

Anyway, I'm of the mindset the Steelers should really be building for a QB in a year or two. Run it back with Pickett and someone cheap, be mediocre, but keep the draft picks and make some free agency plays and see if you can get someone in 2025/2026 with a decent core. Steelers are desperate for Oline help, Heyward is old, need ILB badly, etc.

I have zero confidence that fields would develop into anything worthwhile, so why spend the picks and 5th year option on him. Russ, if you can get him for vet minimum, whatever.

I entirely get why Matt likes Fields. The league is moving in that direction where that raw skillset is coveted.

I just genuinely have seen a lot of those guys flop cause they don't learn how to speed up their throwing game when they can't run, and in my humble opinion you can kinda tell the difference coming out of college who is sorta catching on and who isn't. Thankfully, more and more running quarterbacks ARE getting that kind of tutelage coming out of college and are able to do some of both.

Fields was a machine numbers wise in college, and that may be because he was such a truly special runner that no one could put pressure on him, so he really did have all day to find an open guy cause his legs were THAT good. We see that translate to gaudy rushing numbers, but we also see that the NFL's pocket collapsing is far more consistent than college and they are able to pass rush with structure when everyone on the line is good / disciplined. Fields still does not pass well when he goes up against a team playing contain in the front end and 2-safety zone in the back end, it's too easy to predict that he'll struggle with that.

Tbh while Fields is a better runner than Mariota and is a better deep ball thrower than Mariota and that might carry him to actually retaining a starting job long term, the same things that held Mariota back hold Fields back, and it actually hurts Fields that he's less content to just take the easy option and focus on ball placement / YAC underneath than Mariota was in Tennessee. You can make your running REALLY hard to defend if you're a patient passer like that who can frustrate guys with 1000 cuts to YAC specialists, but Fields isn't.

 

But, to be honest Geno Smith used to be that quarterback and now that he caught on in his 30s he's a better-than-decent starter. I used to think I hated him as a first round QB but really i hated the JETS taking him in the first round lol.

so, I do want to give credit to the idea that if your MO is to always go for "potential" and trust your coaches to develop it... Fields could end up being really dangerous later in his career when the right team takes a chance on him, his raw ability can create WAY more big plays than Geno's
