Because he is earning the same salary either way (just paid by Denver)… It would make sense for him to come cheap, to make himself attractive to contending teams that don’t want to spend a lot of money on him, and not be stuck with shitty options who will throw him the bag

I’m under the assumption that Denver is paying him that money regardless of if he plays or not so wouldn’t he just make additional money from whatever team he signs with?

I could be completely wrong though

Jimmy Garoppolo makes over 24m. If Fields performs well enough to keep for another year, $20 is an absolute steal. And if he doesn't, cut him.

we’re saying the same thing here except Russ is cheap for TWO years

I think whatever he signs for offsets what Denver owes. So if they owe him 80 million and he signs for 1m, they still owe 79.

no, whatever he gets paid by the new team, gets subtracted from the money Denver owes

I think he’s going to do what 99% of NFL players do and take the highest offer presented to him. Don’t think he’s really in a position to be picky about which team he plays for and for how much at this stage of his career

The fifth-year options are guaranteed by a specific date, right? If so, if he doesn’t pan out, they can easily just cut him instead of laying him $20m+

His offer is the exact same unless someone makes the dumbest decision of all time

Whether it makes sense for Russ or not, I just don’t see him taking a vet min unless that’s the absolute only option.

Exactly. If he works out, then you've got a 25 year old QB on the cheapest starting deal in the league. If he doesn't, cut him before mid-March.

That’s exactly what I just said about Russell though. Vet min is cheap enough to not even be stuck with him as an option. I feel like he’s obviously better than Pickett but if you still have issues then cut and move on! Draft competition and bench him! You don’t have to owe him the $39M lol. That’s a position of high flexibility as well, the only difference is there is tape out there showing that Russell can read defenses really well in an offense he’s comfortable in.

    there is one way out

Would Russ sign somewhere that wouldn't tell him he'd be the starter? I can't see Pittsburgh telling that to him upfront.

I can’t see him going to another team unless he’s the starter.

I think it’s likely that neither Russ nor Fields are the answer, but I strongly believe the best option is Fields, who has more upside at this stage of his career at 25, than Russ does in his age-36 season

Well, ideally you convince him he will be and don’t admit to him that you’ve got about an 8-game clock for him to prove he isn’t gonna suck lol

I agree with this point. I like Fields more as a player, but if the return is what Matt has said he expects it to be, vs. the cost of signing Russ for the vet minimum (@Texas Flood he has offset language so basically he's making $35million next year no matter what. However much he signs for just comes off of what Denver owes him, it's not in addition to) than the better answer to me is Russ. And if the best argument against Russ is "What happens if he works out? Do you sign him?" then I'm happy to live with that problem next year lol

Right. We have to remember that, at the end of the day, these are prideful people. That might may be misplaced at times, but QBs that sign to be backups rarely become a starter again
