there are decent suburbs of okc depending on what you're looking for I guess, but most of them feel like housing developments built around shopping centers. there are definitely "cool" neighborhoods within okc like Plaza & Paseo, but that's not where any nba players would live

I would imagine most athletes live on the north side, in Edmond or a bit further north where the houses get bigger and more spread out, or probably in Nichols Hills which is like 15-20 minutes north of downtown and has been the wealthy area for the entire history of okc

there are like 6 or 7 "towns" completely enveloped by OKC's city limits because everyone in charge was like "let's be BIG DEAL and BE A BIG CITY" in the 60s & 70s and started annexing all of these smaller communities. If you look at a map of the city limits, it's wonky as hell. Nichols Hills is one of those that OKC wraps around

for reference, we live on the southeast side of the city, technically in a suburb. but the city limits are so insane, you can be driving west on the interstate and be in basically farmlands and you'll see "OKC CITY LIMITS" signs

there's the rumor/story that Pau Gasol didn't want to sign with OKC because we didn't have an opera house. That's always been very funny to me.

This sounds so much like Jacksonville especially that last paragraph. The only difference is it has nice beaches and waterways and nice weather (which I adore a lot - but that also makes it possible to price gouge Jacksonville right now so two sides to that coin)

Affordability aside, Jax can be selectively treated like 3 fairly cool towns (Jax Beach, Riverside/Avondale, downtown/San Marco) rather than a sad major city. When I was there as an adult I ONLY did the cool shit and avoided all the miles of subdivisions and cul de sac houses. Urban Jacksonville is actually pretty small and behaves differently than the overwhelming north Florida vibes all around it. The beaches are a 35 minute drive away - convenient, but clearly not the same town, you go through so much nondescript suburb-land (including the athletes preferred location, Golden Glades) to get there.

There is no reason Jax needed to all be one city, other than exactly why it was intended - to crush the progressive, largely black, inner city population’s vote by adding more conservative voters from rural surrounding areas.
