You also are very right that Millvale / Lawrenceville / Bloomfield would be my spot if i moved to Pittsburgh haha. Though southside seems more like the kind of area I'd go to watch sports.

Cant speak to the others, but Mr. Smalls is a Pittsburgh mainstay; in a way that a ton of scene bands would play the HoB in Cleveland and Mr. Smalls in Pittsburgh as part of their tours and then they'd play the Trocadero in Philly...maybe the DC equivalent is like the Black Cat? Youre gonna get a music crowd there vs being a sideshow

Squirrel Hill was a weird scene like 15yrs ago when I was dating a girl there; its funny that they have an emo night there, cause I didnt get the vibe that a lot of people there were going to Warped Tour, etc.

Yeah the main room of Mr smalls is definitely too big for us, but they’re one of those tiered venues that also has a smaller room / stage upstairs, and that’s been recommended to me for years as a great spot for upcoming bands to get booked

It’s more like how Masquerade in ATL has like a 100 cap, a 300 cap, and a 1000 cap room and therefore hosts everything from locals / unknown DIY touring acts up to large chorus-core bands that are not HUGE but big for punk/indie. Whereas, Black Cat is a flat 500 cap which is still too big for us but too small for the scene bands that blew up

It’s so odd lol. Not my top choice because I imagine sports bros go to a place called “sports bar” and expect to hear sports bro goatee-grunge music or a DJ. But they def have bands consistently enough to where you might not be totally a “side show” there. At any venue where people pay even 25% attention to bands, I am confident I can turn that to 60-80-% by the time our set is almost over, and sometimes that’s the best way to gain NEW fans in an area you haven’t played before because people are already there.

A place that’s just music, you have all the attention, but people don’t come for anything else so you have to work to draw people. Ticketed-entry venues are actually a lot tougher for your first time in town than a music bar, brewery, or house show. Some of these venues will literally cancel your show at the last minute while you’re already on the road if you can’t convince them your show will draw at least 25-30 people cause their profit model is so dependent on people showing up for the bands. (That’s why you do what I’m doing - network with a BUNCH of DIY conscious bands before you book the tour, and if they’re available, theyll open the show and do the local promo for you.)

I had to do a similar thing at Fire Betty’s Arcade Bar once in Tallahassee - yes, it’s an actual arcade bar, people mostly paying attention to games and drinks - but that ended up being one of my best tour dates, full room of 200 people who weren’t there for us all ended up rocking. I still have connections there today because of that show. To me, once they’re in the building, if I can’t get their attention that’s on me. And that’s certainly easier than getting support bands 3 months in advance, who will distribute flyers and pay a few bucks to Meta so their posts get promoted on social media, pitching a Tuesday show to some Charlotte venue that finally responded to your email, and crossing your fingers it doesn’t bomb or get dropped lol

But yeah there are some wild venues. Columbus has a venue / bar called Dirty Dungarees that’s literally a laundromat, how cool is that? A drink and some live bands while folding laundry. I love that shit. That is a very intuitive way to make it so that even Tuesday shows and two bands no one ever heard of can still have a small crowd of Ohio State college students guaranteed. They seem popular though, they’re one of the only venues I’ve researched that is almost fully booked already for the week of my tour

One of Cleveland’s better known DIY spots, Mahall’s in Lakewood, is a bowling alley that hosts bands - which Pittsburgh apparently has THREE of lmao (though one is a good distance outside the city and another one only has shows Wednesdays)

the crafthouse is ok. its like a diner/bar setup w a big bowling alley in the same building. it sounds good but location kind of sucks though. i think anyone who isnt a big act and headlining w have a tough time getting a good draw there
