I really just don’t care about stats that much, they matter but not to the extent I’m comparing Fred’s stats 1:1 to guys who DIDNT lose 3 years to injury and DIDNT have to share 3 prime years with MJD. From a stats perspective, Fred got robbed of being a top 10 rusher ever. The fact that he’s still 17th even though he had 3 lost years and 3 split-carry years is the part I don’t expect a non-Jags fan to acknowledge but it’s certainly a pretty crucial part of the discussion. He is 1100 rushing yards away from 10th.

I think he was clearly better than Matt Forte, hell, 30 year old Fred was better than prime Forte, I’ll even put it that way. And to make the point even louder he was better than Frank Gore, the third most productive RB of all time. So yeah. Once you’re in that 12,000 / 13,000 total yard range, it’s really way more about eye test to me. Context changes how stats are viewed. No non-Cowboys fan thinks Emmitt Smith was actually the best RB of all time. And every football fan thinks Calvin was a top 4 receiver all time regardless if he retired early.

Another example - did Forte catch the ball a lot more than Fred, sure. By the stats, Fred wasn’t a “receiving back”. But that’s where the eye test comes in… several of Fred’s best highlights are him catching long ass passes cause he jumped over dudes for the ball. He 100% had that skill, not just a little bit, he could make actually tough catches. We woulda seen it more than a couple times a season, if he played in a later era when every team was throwing a bunch of actual routes and not just screens and checkdown passes to running backs, rather than 2-3 teams.

@whitenblue88 you ready to hate this? I actually think skills wise Fred and Edge James were VERY comparable and the primary reason James had more production is because he was in a much more stable, high powered offense almost his whole career and only had one injury setback the whole time. I can’t say Fred was better than James but they’re in the same tier, above Gore / Forte / other stat padders.

 

The point where stats matter: when your records are frankly untouchable. That’s Jerry Rice. No amount of eye test will make me think Moss or Owens was better than Rice. But when the gap is smaller I’m more liberal about how I judge
