So that sounds like he’s evenly distributed between all 3. 33% each.

Y is the slot, Randall. Z is the other WR on the outside who lines up off the line of scrimmage

Is it not a valid worry to think he can’t lead the offense and take on the WR1 burden without a Julio type figure to do it for him?

Is this all plays or just pass plays? They put Hines Ward in the slot on running plays just cause he could block really well

I see Lamb at X whenever there’s a play designed to hit the X downfield in a key moment. That’s what I’m drawing from. I want a receiver who’s even capable of that

I’m sorry that your numbers that you tried So Hard (see Google) to dig for don’t account for all the context that exists in a game

Gallup, as an individual, probably would benefit more from being lined up as a Z receiver. I think most WRs would. It’s not easy playing the X receiver role because you don’t get free releases off the line against press. The receivers are more likely to get jammed and then they need to recover all while running their route.

The Cowboys, as a whole, benefit more from lining Gallup up as the X so they can put Lamb and Cooks (previously Cooper) in better positions to succeed. Does that make Lamb’s and Cooks’ jobs easier? Sure, but it makes the offense better and more efficient so who cares

Ridley showed in 2020 that he could be that guy. He was also playing well as an individual route runner in 2021 before he stepped away from the team. I wouldn’t say “He couldn’t do this without Julio.” He showed that he could, even while lying through a significant foot injury. Unfortunately, life happens

They are not google it's literally what they are officially listed as. The depth chart does not list him as the X and neither does where he lines up. You are trying to weasel your way into not being wrong but you are just incorrect and it's incredibly annoying. It is not a big deal that not every WR1 in the NFL isn't the X receiver. Just please move on.

Yeah, and it also makes it easier for them to suddenly be like “okay Lamb’s going to X for this 3rd and 12” because A) the defense, who was previously not devoting extra attention to the X and may even have someone following Lamb around, got caught off guard playcalling wise B) it also makes for a good decoy because naturally you’d assume “oh shit, Lamb’s at X, he’s getting the ball” and then you run or throw a drag route underneath.

this is what I think the Cowboys do, and it’s clever. They play Lamb everywhere else just go get him in open space and get opponents heads spinning, so that it’s easier to straight up beat double coverage at X with him when they GOTTA have a play, cause it’s not an all-game thing teams can just write in Sharpie in their playsheet. That’s great for Dak Prescott.

if I’m drafting lamb, he counts as an example of what I’m looking for. I’m not seeking ONLY an X Skillset, but seeing as they have the hardest job when the game is on the line, certainly you’d like somebody who CAN handle that really hard but really necessary thing. And although Kupp / Lamb-like diversity is preferred in a WR1, it doesn’t work the other way around - it’s not likely your Y will be able to do X jobs for you, and you need a Secret Third Thing (I.e. Kelce and Andrews and Gronk’s roles on their offenses) to be successful in those vital scenarios.

Typically all of them do. The ones that don't list them by targets and I just don't use those. Lamb, Kupp, all the others I mentioned, do not primarily line up at X. They are, by definition, not the team's primary X receiver. Lamb, when he's not in the slot, usually gets called upon at the Z more than the X. Kupp as well. It's because they're incredibly dangerous in motion and motioning the teams WR1, which they are, despite not being the X, demands more attention from the defense.
