The thing with Ridley is, at this point, he’s not a reliable X receiver, but that’s fine. His best years in Atlanta were when he was lining up as the Z receiver on the outside. I think he showed the potential to become an X receiver, but I think injuries, taking time away from the team in 2021, and the suspension in 2022 sapped him of that.

Still, that 2020 season was magical though. Absolutely ludicrous that he was able to do what he did playing through a significant foot injury for most of the season and Julio missing half the season himself.

 

Man quit playing you do not see no motherfuckin Gallup running a hitch corner and jumping over the robber zone safety who is there to pseudo-bracket him with the CB on third down. Lots of teams do shit on other downs to change stuff up but who’s the dominant X receiver running an X route when it’s third and 9 and Dak HAS to pass? It’s usually Lamb!

You are not correct. Lamb is the WR1, he is not the X receiver. He CAN be sure, like literally every single other player in the league, like you said earlier about man vs. zone actually. But the vast majority of what Lamb, and Kupp, do is not at the X.

 

They do not ask their other receivers to beat press at the line and beat a safety to the ball on third down like that

Lamb effectively fills the X’s primary role even if he plays Y and Z a lot too.

He does not "play a lot of slot and Z", he literally plays twice as much as he does at X.

 

It’s like, you can’t call a man coverage specialist, not a man coverage specialist just cause he’s in zone 70% of the time. That’s just, in context, what the whole league does. Change it up with zone so that when you call man to man it hits better and isn’t predictable. That man to man specialist is still the guy they’re saying “go lock down AJ Brown” when they do call a man blitz to mess with Hurts

 

Nobody is saying that Gallup is out here reliably beating press coverage time and time again and making crazy catches. He just has the physicality that the Cowboys have preferred at that position.

Some coaches also just put WRs on islands so they can get their more dynamic WRs free releases and the ball in space! Gallup is not that caliber of player compared to Lamb, Cooks, and Cooper!

 

The X receiver lines up wide and on the line of scrimmage, typically on the left and opposite the tight end. The receivers I listed earlier are WR1s who primarily do not do that and by definition are not the team's X receiver.

 

It was still Revis island regardless if it was man or zone

Prime OBJ had the X skillset and was most valuable for that even though he did a lot of Y and a lot of slot

 

Is Gallup even physical though? I’d argue he has more of a Y skillset
