I think Campbell and Darious are capable of playing good man coverage because it’s the aggressive man-mimicking forms of zone that they succeed best at.

Nielsen has directly alluded to doing that sort of thing, and Kris Richard actually made a name for himself doing that in Seattle with Pete Carroll’s press-zone hybrid cover 3 shell scheme. So it doesn’t make sense when you go “but the stats say Caldwell is zone and Nielsen is man!” Because schematically they’re talking about the same zone-man hybrid thing, and Nielsen / Richard are probably just better at doing it (hopefully.) What they’re talking about is what Campbell and Darious are GOOD at, and they mentioned coming here was exciting because the defensive talent that’s already there to mold was a draw.

My perspective is that drafting another CB is a luxury pick when the important goal is supporting Trevor Lawrence and answering the huge questions raised by our struggle to pass the ball last year. Our offense clearly just lacks talent and needs more. Our guys “can play” and “can run routes” and “can block decently most of the time” but no one’s scaring anybody or dominating anything. Evan Engram is the scariest thing we have (maybe Etienne could be a 1500 yard phenom one day, but not behind this line). I don’t feel that way about the defense.

The defense raised questions too, but that just felt so obviously coaching and playcalling related. It happened so suddenly and only for the last 5-6 weeks of their second season together. In my GUT I think if we ran it back with much better coaches (which we got that. Step one). Lloyd / Walker would play more veteran-like in year 3, we could do SOMETHING about our interior line, and our secondary would be back to balling.

they go hand in hand. Unless you are Tom Brady dink and dunk passing 1400 yards to Wes Welker, your WR1 is an X receiver. The reason why is because the X receiver has the hardest job! That’s always what I’ve meant when I said “Kirk isn’t a WR1”. It’s not about “can he get 1300 yards receiving in ideal conditions” as much as “can he still do 1150+ and 8 TDs while taking on the most difficult coverage and having the attention of two or more defenders who all watched extra film on you?”

I will concede this point. You still think more highly of his skillset than i do, which is okay, but I think we can at least agree he’d be a WAY better slot receiver than a guy who goes up against the other teams best corner AND a safety all game, no??

In a good WR class where several guys go first round, usually yeah, the fourth or fifth guy can often still have the potential to lead your offense like that. We’ve seen it before. Remind me of what draft pick Minnesota got Jefferson or Tennessee got AJ Brown etc. Wasn’t OBJ the third receiver in his draft? Turns out Watkins was a bust and Evans and OBJ were just that good, and even if you got Landry or even Davante Adams you turned out alright. Etc (of course it could also be the 2022 class and maybe NO ONE’s that good lol)

Im fine with addressing IOL and CB in FA. I like Quinyon Mitchell but he feels like me buying a Subaru Impreza when I really need an Outback for carrying gear. I can buy the Impreza once my band and my day job are doing well enough to get a tour van lmao

2,000 rushing yards in one season gets you in the HOF and I had his jersey.

Meh, that’s what first ballot + records + constantly celebrating them in TV and social media content is for.

I like a hall of fame that acknowledges enough players so that every team’s greatest of their greats has a chance to be in Canton. It’s not just “you’re going to miss some guys”…. Your style of HOF would only have players from like, the most successful 7 teams in it lmao. And then Barry Sanders.

Dan Marino is a big example.

he never won anything but does that matter when he and Joe Montana basically taught the rest of the league what anticipation is, and why it helps you throw deep passes before you or your receiver gets fuckin slammed? Now you basically can’t even get an extension past your rookie contract as a starter if you can’t prove to your team by year 4/5 that you know how to do that. Marino’s 1984 is legendary and arguably still today the most impressive QB season (as far as getting chunks of yards the hard way) for its era of any QB in any era.

that’s a huge impact. Hall of Fame.

My standard is very simply "if they can't make it in in a maximum of...let's call it 3 years since the NFL Is determined to have a max number per year" sorry bub.
