And the fact that you delineate man schemes from zone schemes actually is an example of how Twitter nerds are so in their heads about stats, that they miss a lot of blending context that exists in the NFL that isn’t so easy to just separate into different stat categories.

When we’re talking about different schemes being difficult for players, we’re talking about how some coaches coach zone differently, how some coaches coach gap assignments differently, etc. we’re not talking about “well THIS guy calls man and THIS guy calls zone” every coach does both and all players are expected to know how to do both.

And sometimes it’s actually a hybrid and it’s tough to really even say it’s one or the other unless you watch a LOT of film on that specific team to understand what’s expected of their corners schematically. Sometimes cover 3 or cover 2 looks like man (in the form of Cover 1 or 2-man-under), sometimes off-man looks like zone etc so forgive me but I don’t just blindly trust graphs and tables of how much percentage of each is being called.

is outside corner a need though? Do we lack a CB1 who has done a nice job against some really good WRs so far? Have we already given up on Tyson Campbell?

Please try to avoid simplifying it this much. I am telling you strategically why Kirk and Ridley aren’t WR1s. It’s not just a preference thing. They don’t do what an X receiver has to do to consistently succeed - thrive even when additional safety attention is sent to their side of the field. That’s what I mean by “not a dog” - they’re not coming through for Trevor in any situation that is more difficult than a basic one on one or a basic zone read. This is exactly why Allen Robinson didn’t work out. My opinions on why they are or aren’t good enough to do that are secondary to the fact that they just aren’t doing that.

And yes, only the best WRs can do that, only the best tackles can road grade but ALSO kick slide and stay square with a speed rusher, but that’s the entire point! We are about to sign a QB to a giant deal, we better make sure he has the best support, other teams with big name QBs do EXACTLY that

Well keep Ezra cause he’s cheap and at least he’s better than Bartsch / Fortner! A guy who got traded for an 6th isn’t getting a big contract. That’s a move in the right direction. And maybe sign a free agent who’s either definitively cheaper or definitively better than Scherff. I’d start there.

I see HOF as acknowledging players who had highlight reel talent for a long time,

which doesn’t necessarily mean they played the longest or accumulated the most stats, it just means that when they were HUMMIN in their primes, they made the league great to watch cause they did ridiculous things with the human body.

Obviously you should still probably play 8-10 years to be eligible - sure, they’re not gonna put Bo Jackson in for playing 3 years - but even that has exceptions. If you were SUPER elite and were putting up nearly unprecedented results (Boselli, Terrell Davis) for 5ish years they don’t care if your career was long.

from the angle of stats, did Jimmy and Fred have obvious HOF careers? No. Fred has a better argument but he’s still not quite top 15. Neither of them got lucky and had the like, Curtis Martin / Isaac Bruce 15 year career of no setbacks on good teams with good coaches. But from the angle of “this dude was a scary talent and I still haven’t seen more than a handful of guys do what they did 20 years later”, yes, both of them. Ridiculous players who made ridiculous, clutch, memorable plays and were hard for other teams to gameplan for.

These are literally people who work with the NFL and fact check directly with the teams about what they run, this isn't a random guy on twitter with Sunday Ticket.

But yes, no one calls only one, it's just that some call one more than the other - which is something you kept saying about Caldwell throughout the season calling too much man but now suddenly that's fine - and players are expected to do both, but they can be worse at one than another.

Yes, it is a need. You need two. It's not giving up on Campbell to draft a CB2 anymore than it's giving up on Kirk to draft a WR. The Bengals have taken 3 DBs top 60 in the last two seasons and they had two very good corners on the roster already. That's what the best teams do - they stay ahead of the curve.

An X receiver isn't WR1. It's an X receiver. If that's what you mean then say that. I agree, we need an X receiver.

CB fits all those things as well and no, taking the 4th or even 5th WR in the draft is not going to be better than taking potentially CB1. Especially when that WR4 or 5 isn't even necessarily an X.

Well, Bartch isn't even here so I hope he's better than him haha. IOL is going to be the easiest to address in FA. CB will be easy as well though so if we do that then obviously we don't need to look at a CB in round one.
