Man to man is what Darious was good at in LAR and what Campbell was good at in college and his rookie year. Every team calls man to man sometimes. It’s not like they don’t know how to do it.

and we really don’t have a “nickel” WR either. Zay Jones attacked a woman and Parker Washington is MAYBE an upside WR3 if his development goes right. I dunno if that’s better than Tre Herndon and the upside CBs we drafted last year.I’d love to slot Kirk here because we got a better X receiver.

Kirk, whose skillset is completely neutralized whenever he’s double covered, is more on that WR1-WR2 borderline. At best he should have a barely top 30 contract. WR1s are expected to beat corner down low and safety over the top sometimes, and neither Ridley nor Kirk has shown they can do it. (Ridley at least has the extreme suddenness/agility and nuance to his route running to where it’s believable he can get there… for a couple years until he slows down at age 33)

That’s why I’m pounding the table for a high draft pick, or if available a really good free agent at the position. (I’ll settle for stealing Franklin in round 2 or Odunze in round one like you did in some mock drafts). I’m fine with keeping who we have - IF we make sure to knock the first round pick out of the park in our biggest need (interior trenches). Otherwise, get me a high ceiling WR for Lawrence dammit lol. He needs either Ridley to take a big step up this year, or he needs to raise that talent ceiling with another player who can do things Ridley can’t.

I get this. It just sucks we boxed ourselves into this predicament. This is why I’m listing tackle as a big need. We’ll be “fine” if Cam is still here, but we can kill both birds and save money PLUS improve the line if we can somehow move up a few spots for whoever that third best offensive tackle is.

savings above the dead money is what you look at. Dead money itself is a sunk cost, it’s how much you save between their cap number and the money that’s already dead that matters. The actual cap savings are not as high cause he’s getting paid way less to begin with.

I just don’t see how you don’t recognize our CBs are not highly paid and were only bad for a couple weeks, our line has been bad for years and does have two highly paid disappointing veterans, one of these things seems like a bigger issue than the other?

Jimmy was more productive on a game to game basis than Ward - more yards in almost two seasons fewer games - but Ward has that playoff resume and was famously an elite blocker for the WR position, which can’t be quantified with stats

I think both deserve to be in HOF consideration, and naturally Ward deserves to get voted in faster because he won rings in Pittsburgh and was a more complete player. But it’s close cause Jimmy was more of a highlight reel, big-play WR.

We called it at one of the lowest rates. Darious was better at zone in LA and they were almost as zone heavy as we were. Tyson was bad in man coverage his rookie year and just okay at Georgia.

Tre Herndon, Greg Junior, and Chris Claybrooks are all free agents. That leaves Montaric Brown and Christian Braswell, who is the only corner we drafted last year and he was in the sixth round.

At best he should have a barely top 30!? Allen Lazard, Tyler Boyd, Michael Thomas, Tim Patrick, Russell Gage, JuJu, Michael Gallup, Odell Beckham, Courtland Sutton, Hunter Renfrow, and Jakobi Meyers all deserve to get paid more than Kirk? Come on lol.

Settling for Franklin in round 2 or Odunze is also insane. Drafting stubborn is how bad teams stay bad. You don't take the biggest need no matter what every single time. BPA.

We would have to move into the top ten.

I'm saying both are a problem. I don't care what the "bigger" issue is, I care about maximizing value by takng the best players available and also taking advantage of free agency. Having the luxury of going "I think we have a better left tackle on the bench" than our league average one is better than not even having corners on the bench.

From a pure football perspective, Antonio brown is more deserving.

whatever man lol Nielsen himself said that a lot of his man coverage is actually a cover 3 shell that looks like man because they’re pressing. I really think a lot of stat collectors don’t look for the subtle differences between these but I’ll stop there cause I know there’s no way you’re agreeing. The simple version is our corners play aggressive and press guys they’re good. When they play off they’re bad. There are man and zone versions of both. If anything Nielsen’s press / downhill coverage scheme should add to those strengths.

Yeah but you also don’t need an early pick to get a good nickel corner, whereas you do for a WR who’s gonna push Kirk/Ridley or a T who’s gonna push Cam. That’s the big factor in all of this to me. And I thought you liked Montaric Brown.

That just sounds like a lot of bad contracts, holy shit lol. I mean point taken, maybe us paying Kirk wasn’t as bad as what those guys got paid. But none of those guys except Sutton is a WR1 and nobody else except Meyers are even WR2s. This just reinforces my philosophy that it’s better to just draft another high upside guy who COULD be a dog if the last upside receiver you took proves to you he’s not a dog.

….right, which is why I’m acknowledging value here, and realizing that talent at premium positions costs more. So even though corner might be a bigger need depth-wise, talent wise if we want to address those other positions (I very much do) then we better do it early cause THATS who BPA is early. Or should I say BVA, best value available.

corner makes sense from some angles but “makes sense” isn’t “best solution”. .

That’s not a luxury when your line was graded bottom five in the league by some sources. We shouldn’t be saying “we can’t afford to lose these veterans” - lose what! unchecked mediocrity? we should be saying “damn we are paying $40M to two ‘leaders’ of a bottom five line? We need better leadership for that kinda money, or else we should go young and start over”

Good thing everyone I’m discussing is definitively top 25 then lol

NFL’s been around 60 years. I feel like one guy from each position group between every other year and once every three years is a fair pace
