Fred’s already a finalist, matter of time

he may not get proper respect from fans, but most of the great defensive players from that era and several of the greatest running backs of all time do put that respect on his name

There's probably some deeper sociological discussion about the cognitive dissonance of an individual validating they like the right things and are correct in how they view the world, but I imagine it's mostly just "I liked this guy a lot and want him to get the credit he deserves."
