it’s infinitely more music snob pretentious to use emo to mean something other than My Chemical Romance/Fall Out Boy adjacent

context matters. No I wouldn’t call them an emo band to Becky the real estate agent, but on my IG story where I’m promoting friends bands that I like to other music scene conscious people - who already get what I’m going for with my first wave post hardcore meets second wave indie rock vibe - saying “Midwest emo” or “90s emo” does communicate the sentiment effectively to that audience

It’d be like if I denied my own roots in pop punk and all the waves of emo from the punkest and rawest to the poppiest and most melodramatic. Everyone can hear that that influenced at least 30 or 40 percent of my sound, and I did grow up in that era where it was popular, why am I wasting my breath trying to act like I’m better than it
