When you hit a mothafucka, you hit that mothafucka Prestigious

Applying for jobs feels like trying to get dates on Tinder but you have no style and you’ve never had a girlfriend before and you only have a college understanding of how to seduce or interest people

It’s basically that except if you do it enough at some point you get laid

  3. For accounting there are contracting firms like Robert half that place you in temp positions or temp to hire. Anything like that in IT?

Very important distinction - IS isn’t IT

I did take a course that introduced me to networks and hardware and how internet connections actually work but in general I’m not trying to get into that field, not nearly as much upward mobility. Being a help desk IT guy can help you get boring ass tech jobs like “database administrator” and maybe if you’ve been in multiple IT roles over a 15 year career THEN you might know enough about tech vulnerability to rival a cybersecurity masters graduate… but nothing that’s gonna have you designing stuff or writing code.

I do wanna stick to information science, even if I end up doing UX/UI which also isn’t very heavy on code I’m designing stuff and I’m communicating the needs of our clients to the code guys in a way that they’ll understand how to code it, which can still feel active and fun.

    i feel that.

unsolicited advice, but i don't necessarily think a certification will move the needle too much for you, especially if you're looking at entry level positions.

this isn't an attempt to trivialize the effort that will probably be required, but if you did well in the classes you listed, you'll likely re-acquaint with the skills faster than you think.

first, i'd just knock the rust off of whatever programming skills you have. once you're back in a groove, i'd recommend familiarizing yourself with one web framework (django or fastapi for python, ruby on rails), maybe something like React (for js). just build simple apps that do silly stuff, and put them on a github account that you can link in your resume.

once you have those basics down, just do like an easy leetcode problem every couple of days (also put this code in a github). this would help you prepare for interviews.

again - it is not necessarily a short road to getting ready, but you're further down that road than you think. and then just apply to anything and everything, even if you don't meet the job description perfectly. those postings have absurd requirements.

Like the problem is I very much understand math and linear computer logic and problem solving and how statistics and calculus works etc etc. I took enough well rounded courses to understand every layer of how what tech customers need translates to how backend people actually write it and every legal, ethical, and cybersecurity question the team should be asking themselves in the process. I just don’t know how to prove it

I 100% have the aptitude to get the kind of jobs that are $100k+ salary in big cities once I’ve learned the ropes of the industry, but I probably have to quit my band to apply myself enough to actually prove i belong and that’s what I haven’t been willing to do. The problem is I didn’t realize I’d get fired for no reason twice in a row AND lose my car all in the same like, month right after I finally was making enough money in service to be semi-comfortable

  7. Fair but point still stands. Experience is key and even temp jobs are worthwhile at this point. And using recruiters.

I mean, what you probably gotta do is what my brother is doing this summer, find a bootcamp that has major companies hire directly from it. Think he's going to Chicago, but I know there's a bunch of east coast ones.

No, the firms all hire directly out of CS programs usually (and even then, it super regional...so wrong place/wrong time and you can be SOL).

Some of the bootcamps are just money grabs (like basically any online learning stuff), so its all about which ones are hiring directly from them.

just read you want an emphasis in IS, which i'm not sure if that aligns with what i recommended lol - i was thinking more web development path.

this too - even when i'm not seriously looking for jobs i'll link with and spam recruiters on linkedin just to see whats out there.

  11. There’s also gotta be gig work websites you could use to take on quick jobs. There are for accounting at least. Like 50 bucks to write this code type stuff. Would refresh your memory and get you experience.

Web development is also a possibility for me, I like that better than IT, I enjoyed the class even though it was hard and time consuming

but I keep hearing that that career field is highly expendable since remote work became a huge phenomenon, and regularly those workers are either expected to work intense overtime to meet unrealistic deadlines, or are often laid off or only given short contracts cause its so easy to find people in Southeast Asia or wherever to do it 65 hours a week for minimal salary

I do know it’s possible to be a successful freelance web developer, but the people who are actually competitive in that field have been doing it as a hobby they stumbled into since before college, they didn’t suddenly learn it at age 30

All good advice, and I'd add to this to poke around for open source projects you can potentially contribute to. That can be a really good way to add some work on industry-level codebases to the resume while also building knowledge and experience contributing to that kind of stuff. It's a different beast than personal portfolio projects

grain of salt since i have quite a bit of experience in my role - graduated in 2014 - but in my non-consulting jobs i have never felt a crunch to work overtime (and honestly don't think that's a reality unless you work for a startup or FAANG). i've never been on a contract, always salaried, and have had seen some layoffs and hiring of international work, but i think it's still a pretty secure field.

there may be a day of AI reckoning coming, but i don't think that day is any time soon where web developers aren't needed.

as for freelancing - it is all about networking and who you know. do one gig well, and then you're on their shortlist for future gigs. a lot of hustle and knowing where to look (which i don't really know lol).

  18. My company will hire people to do coding off of upwork.

also we just implemented a new erp and we are paying a consulting service so much money for helping with the implementation. Should get into that. Netsuite, workday, whatever big systems that are out there.

How do you “spam a recruiter” what’s the etiquette for that with a recruiter you just found on LinkedIn
