I did a lot when I graduated and I gave up cause I didn’t get anywhere. I’ll try again but the degree doesn’t really mean shit in tech cause I don’t have anything to demonstrate what I can actually do in tech. Apparently a 3.9 major GPA with a lot of my classes being code-related isn’t enough for them to think I’m capable of learning complex concepts quickly and efficiently, I apparently should’ve saved all that so I can show them a portfolio

I took an object oriented programming Python class where we learned how to integrate modules that have already been written by other coders as open source code tools, into functions that simplified very complex code, by writing re-usable templates for specific patterns of code logic.

and then I took a full on web development course where we started with like a bootcamp on HTML front end design and JavaScript back-end (and we learned about how to write code to load asynchronously so it responds to user input rather than doing its own thing in the same order every time). and then had to connect the front end to the back end using a similar object-oriented approach, that also mixed python and SQL in to the JavaScript. One of our projects was to create a search function and a map embedded onto a web page that could web scrape google reviews and search restaurants by zip code and name they are listed on google, and it would in real time update both the list results and the pins on the map. If I saved any code I wrote for this course onto a web page where I’m paying for hosting, it could possibly have helped me get hired.

I also took UX/UI design and research related courses where we actually polled real people on real tech problems for an app we were mock designing, drew diagrams that changed with each stage of interviews, and made decisions about what the app is actually gonna do, who it’s gonna appeal to, and how to (visually and functionally) design the interface to be comfortable for those target users based on our ground research.

A very hard course I took was a data science course where we used both R and Microsoft excel to solve optimization problems and do multiple linear regression analysis, to determine the ideal formula of investments to achieve the maximum return based on statistical projections. I was told by the professor I could TA the course because I was helping explain complex math problems to a lot of students during discussion sessions.

I didn’t want to TA that course, but I did TA for an introductory python course. And also for an information ethics course where we studied a lot about how copyright and data collection has essentially eroded individuals’ right to privacy, confidentiality and free sharing of information - which in turn connected with a lot of themes in my cybersecurity class, because a lot of cybersecurity is compromised because of invasive data collection.

I also studied information architecture, and I think that abkut covers the highlights. But the problem is, instead of specializing in any one of these areas which would’ve been good advice to hear at the time, I just took a class in all of them to try to develop a well rounded knowledge of the career in entering. As it turns out, I’m not able to demonstrate that I know how to do all this stuff because I didn’t spend much time building that diverse portfolio of code, or of UX UI projects, or of data science skills etc, and I was hoping my great major GPA and glowing letters of recommendation from the professors I studied and TA’d for would get me hired. But so far no dice. I don’t know enough to get a real entry level job, My cumulative GPA still sucks from dropping out after 6 years of on and off school in the first place and that’s what most paying internships look at, a non paying internship isn’t a possibility for a 33 year old with grown man bills, now I’m too old and too far removed from graduating for an internship.

And now I have a lot of anxiety about all of this because I haven’t continued my education and I forgot a lot of stuff by now, but I don’t know how to find a way out. I’ve tried networking with people but the few people who gave me their card and had a good long conversation with me ghosted my email and never followed up about the opportunities they said they might be able to connect me to.

So I concluded that I need to get certified in some sought after coding skills to get hired… and I’ve been procrastinating for like a year on that because, between my shitty bar / restaurant jobs and my music passion I haven’t had any energy to sit and re-learn code and read 300+ webpages of documentation on how to use JavaScript etc
