the 5th year option has to be picked up or declined prior to a player's 4th year, right?

Teams have until sometime in May to pick up a player’s fifth-year option. I expect the Eagles to pick up Smith’s by then, unless they get an extension done with him prior to that

I’d be surprised by this scenario, but that’s because I’m viewing the Bengals as a team that may try to compete for a super bowl for one more year before needing to retool the roster a bit

Then again, with Joe Burrow, they should be competing for a super bowl every year

If you want a player bad enough, there is always a way to keep that player. Cap Hell is a mega-overrated concern.

im not gonna get into this again too deep but the cap is real, the manipulation of it is also real for in-house players under contract

But, if say... a team like the Dolphins wants to tag Chris Wilkins.. well, theyre like 50mil or something over the cap once the new year hits, theyll need to do significant work to make something like that happen

they could probably manipulate Tua's extension in a way to make his cap hit super low at the start of it but im not sure thats smart, and probably something they have no intention of doing

  10. I agree with the overall point @Dinkleberg made with paying both receivers. But I do think a team like Philly has more confidence to do that with how well they’ve managed their roster for several years. Bengals also have a good roster. But if I were a fan of Cincy I’d be nervous about them navigating that tight cap space.

I think a tag and trade makes sense. They’ll still have a top 3 WR in the league. And every draft has stud WRs. I think Higgins is great but can be replaced as a WR2.

It’s a tough spot to be in.

Pay two guys WR1 money and try to navigate the rest of the roster with tight cap space.

    or

Get a pick or two back, have more cap flexibility to build out your roster, and find a new WR2 via draft.

I feel like that latter is easier to navigate. But I don’t blame them either way.

Admittedly, I’m not familiar with how the Bengals have managed their roster over the last few years than the Eagles, obviously. That certainly could complicate things with their negotiations with Higgins. Like, Howie is big into void years, which have their pros and cons. Idk if the Bengals do that. I also don’t know how they structure their contracts and such. So that’s fair to point out @Swoos

And I’ve thought a lot about the Eagles in-house free agents in relation to contracts of players still under contract and what other needs the Eagles have, which has led me to the belief that I’d be surprised if the team brought back D’Andre Swift.

It bums me out because I think he’s a good player and easily the best RB they’ve had since LeSean McCoy, but Jalen Hurts is going to start being paid some real money now, they have extensions to worry about with DeVonta Smith, Landon Dickerson, and soon Jordan Mailata. Obviously, there’s the situation with Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat. Then there’s all the money wrapped up in older veterans with void years like Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, Darius Slay, and James Bradberry.

I’d be surprised if Swift is back. I don’t think the Eagles are going to be big players in free agency as a result. I think they end up taking swings or mud or lower tier players and hope for the best with their signings and draft picks.

    WR1?

  18. The other thing with the Bengals/Higgins decision….

If you believe Burrow is elite then why are you paying two guys WR1 money? Those are the things you usually do if your QB is…gulp….Brock Purdy. Use that money for OL and defense imo.
