building a stacked roster around a cheap QB is a good NFL strategy. employing the best QB in the league and paying him accordingly is also a good NFL strategy

I like the take because the Patriots have the option of trying to find a "dude" at QB or not, and I would prefer they go that route lol.

 

But also, yeah, a borderline super team lost to a Chiefs team that we all agree is comparatively lacking in some significant areas, simply because Patrick Mahomes walks the earth. Kinda telling when looking at building a team that finding a top-3 QB or whatever gives you a muuuuuuch wider margin of error.

Eagles had an awesome team last year too. Shit happens. Coaching was the biggest reason why the Eagles lost to the Chiefs. You could argue the same about the Niners last night.

I fully believe teams can win super bowls without a top 5 or even top 10 QB like the Eagles and Niners almost did, but Mahomes will cover up so much for his supporting cast, which is why coaching for the opposing team needs to be absolutely on point

I think the Dre Greenlaw injury was absolutely massive. You're expected to build out to account for things like that of course, but an Achilles tear due to just walking on the field is so unfortunate

But Dave is right in phrasing it as "margin for error". Chiefs could have the WR corps they have and lose pieces and still perform. 49ers had to have everything go much more perfectly than the Chiefs did

 

Right. My point isn't that you can't win without Mahomes. My point is finding a stud at QB is worth prioritizing because it makes it significantly less incumbent on like 80+ other people doing their job perfectly.

 

I think this season is mostly a failure on Buffalo, Baltimore and San Fran

This was the 'worst' Chiefs team and those teams still blew it... those teams have been through the ringer, it was time to win it all.

 

That's impossible, Buffalo lost to a coin toss and only a coin toss before and then they got a new rule put in for it so they have to have been good enough to win now

 

And also, again, I'm viewing that take from a Patriots perspective where they're kinda at that decision point of "how do we want to build this? Around the QB, or around a team that enables a QB?"

I agree — Daniels is fun, trading down is less fun, and filling out the roster and then getting a QB later is easier said than done

They’re ideally also doing the Niners thing by year 2 or 3 of his rookie deal anyways (stacked roster around cheap QB) so you’d get the best of both worlds
