Still not as upset about those as I am about 1999 though. 2017 sucked cause of bad reffing but I can admit in hindsight that the 1996, 2007, 2017 Jags overperformed and had too many holes to win the big game. But the ‘99 Jags had what it takes to beat the Rams, that team had almost no holes at all. Coughlin just flat out got outcoached badly by Jeff Fisher, and Brunell had too many bad turnovers, despite that particular Jags team STILL being the most elite, complete team in our history.

I have finally finished up my initial Eagles 2024 offseason plan. I kept it pretty general as far as analysis goes. I wasn't going to go digging for data or specifics numbers to make an argument for or against a player. Just gave overviews of where the Eagles currently are at every position on the roster, what I think they should do (or what I would like for them to do), and what I think they will ultimately do. I included a few free agent targets at almost every position. Happy to explain my thoughts further with anyone interested in them. I'll break it down by positions to make it easier for anyone reading to jump around.

Quarterback

Current Roster:
Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee

Free Agents:
Marcus Mariota

Hurts is obviously the team’s QB1. The question is, how do the Eagles replace Mariota as the QB2? Some might believe McKee, who was a sixth round pick in last year’s draft, should replace Mariota, especially after Mariota performed poorly in training camp and the preseason while McKee impressed. Does that alone mean that McKee should be handed the QB2 job?

The Eagles’ current team makeup indicates that they still view themselves as super bowl contenders. As such, I think the Eagles should look to replace Mariota with a veteran free agent so that they have someone should could hold down the fort for some time in the event that Hurts were to miss any games due to injury. A backup QB who is still a threat as a runner would be ideal so that the Eagles could keep some of the designed QB runs in the offense if the backup has to play.

Free agent targets:
Tyrod Taylor, Jacoby Brissett, Tyler Huntley

Running Back

Current Roster:
Kenny Gainwell, Lew Nichols

Free Agents:
D’Andre Swift, Boston Scott, Rashaad Penny

RB is a position of need this offseason with most of the room set to hit free agency and the debate is what they should do regarding Swift, who is coming off his best season (at least as a rusher). I think Swift is a good, not great, RB. I know the argument is that Howie won’t give a RB an extension, but he hasn’t had a good RB like Swift to offer one to. The notable Eagles RBs since Howie regained control in the front office in 2016: LeGarrette Blount, Jay Ajayi, Darren Sproles, Jordan Howard, Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, Kenny Gainwell, and now Swift.

If the Eagles can sign Swift to a contract similar to those of David Montgomery, James Conner, Austin Ekeler, Miles Sanders, I think it’s a slam dunk move for the team. Swift showed great patience, vision, cuts, and explosiveness as a runner this season. He’s got the juice, but my concern is the coaching staff did not squeeze as much of it as they could have out of him. He was underutilized as a receiver this last season. I would love to see Kellen Moore utilize Swift on angle routes or wheel routes, send him running up the seam, target him on screens more, etc. I think Swift’s upside remains untapped.

If there is any area the Eagles need to improve in at the RB position, it’s pass blocking. All of the Eagles RBs seemed to struggle in pass protection, with Kenny Gainwell serving as the team’s primary pass blocking back, especially when they were running the two-minute offense or playing from behind. Gainwell is a fine back, but he’s just a guy. I would like to see the Eagles bring in a back, either through free agency or the draft, to take on more of a pass blocking role in the offense. They could certainly use one, especially to help pick up a blitzing defender.

Overall, I’d like to see the Eagles bring back Swift and draft a rookie. What I think they’ll do is let Swift walk in favor of a cheaper veteran on a short deal in free agency (or acquire a RB via trade) and draft a rookie. Considering that there was justified speculation that Sirianni could have been fired this offseason, I don’t think the Eagles are going to give a notable deal to a RB if the organization believes that there’s a chance they clean house with the coaching staff year from now and begin to retool the roster as a result.

Free Agent Targets:
D’Andre Swift, Zack Moss, Antonio Gibson

Wide Receiver

Current Roster:
A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Britain Covey, Joseph Ngata, Shaquan Davis, Jacob Harris, Griffin Herbert, Austin Watkins

Free Agents:
Quez Watkins, Olamide Zaccheaus, Julio Jones

WR is quietly a big need again for the Eagles this offseason. While they have Brown and Smith, who make for one of the best WR duos in the league, the depth behind them is currently comprised of Covey, who is one of the league’s best punt returners but has registered very few snaps on offense, and a bunch of players who figure to be practice squad candidates. I think the Eagles should address the position in both free agency and the draft this offseason.

The Eagles could use a reliable, physical WR that can serve as a plus blocker in the run game and on screens, as both Brown and Smith are not good blockers. They could also use someone that can replace the type of juice that Watkins brought downfield, in addition to some elusiveness after the catch. With that being said, Brown and Smith are still the top targets in the offense, plus Dallas Goedert is a big part of the passing game too. Any WRs brought in should not be expected to contribute much on the stat sheet. At least, not for the 2024 season, barring injury. In addition, both should be ready to contribute in a meaningful way, especially if one of Brown, Smith, or Goedert were to miss any time during the season.

Lastly, it’s important that Howie gets an extension done with Smith. While he is entering the final year of his contract, I’m sure the organization will pick up his fifth-year option to keep him under contract through 2025. Still, Brown’s contract effectively runs through 2025, as does Dallas Goedert’s. The team will come to a crossroads soon enough with all three of these players. Smith is one of the best young WRs in the league and is the youngest of the top three targets in the Eagles passing game. It would be a no-brainer decision to prioritize keeping Smith around beyond 2025 over both Brown and Goedert.

Free Agent Targets:
Noah Brown, Josh Reynolds, Kendrick Bourne

Tight End

Current Roster:
Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra, Noah Togiai, E.J. Jenkins

Free Agents:
Jack Stoll (RFA), Albert Okwuegbunam

The Eagles are set with Goedert, who is one of the top TEs in the league, as their starter. Their depth behind him is a concern though. Now; most teams don’t even have a good starting TE, let alone a decent backup who can fill in when needed, but I expect Kellen Moore to utilize more 12-personnel in his scheme than Nick Sirianni has in his. With that said, personnel deployment should be based more around who the personnel is rather than for the sake of scheme.

Stoll is a restricted free agent so the Eagles could render him in an attempt to keep him around if they’d like to. However, as we’ve seen over the last two seasons, Stoll and the other TEs on the roster have been practically nonexistent in the offense, even when Goedert has missed multiple games due to injuries. While Stoll is a decent blocking TE, that isn’t enough to justify keep the TE depth as it has been for the last two seasons.

I think they should address TE2 in free agency or the draft. Perhaps a rookie could eventually replace Goedert as the starter. Goedert is 29 years old and under contract through 2025. Considering his age and the upcoming contract situations for both Brown and Smith, I wouldn’t rule out a notable rookie selection in this upcoming draft. With that said, I don’t think they’re in a rush to replace Goedert just yet, especially with how many young TEs we’ve seen hit the ground running upon entering the league lately.

Free Agent Targets:
Noah Fant, Gerald Everrett, Adam Trautman

Offensive Tackle

Current Roster:
Lane Johnson, Jordan Mailata, Fred Johnson, Brett Toth, Le’Raven Clark

Free Agents:
Jack Driscoll, Roderick Johnson

Lane and Mailata make up a great tackle tandem in the NFL right now, and Fred is signed through the 2024 season after primarily serving as the backup LT last year. The biggest Eagles debate in the coming months will be what the team should do with their first round pick. Many believe the Eagles will use their first to draft the heir apparent to Lane at RT. That aligns with the organization’s philosophy to build through the trenches and have succession plans to develop, especially along the OL.

With that said, Lane indicated last year, after signing a one-year extension to keep him under contract through 2026, that he intends to retire after playing out his current contract. He has since doubled down on that, stating he feels he still has a few good years left in him. As such, some believe the Eagles would be wasting their first round pick on a RT, as they would likely not be a starter for three seasons.

What I can say is that I doubt they sign a free agent to become the new backup RT to replace Driscoll. Maybe they bump Fred over to RT to become Lane’s new backup, but then that creates a new need for a backup LT behind Mailata. Tyler Steen, the team’s projected starting RG, had college experience playing LT and got reps there during training camp and the preseason last year. Perhaps he would become the backup LT behind Mailata, but then that would create a new need at RG. It’s all very confusing to try to project out right now, which is why I believe, early or late, the Eagles are likely to address RT in the draft.

Lane has not played a full season since 2015 and has already considered retirement. Some fans will cling to what Lane has said over the last calendar year, but they should also consider how one significant injury he could suffer entering his age-34 season and beyond could force him to reconsider. You can write it in pen that the Eagles will leave the draft with at least one OT. Consider it likely that they come out with one in the first round.

Free Agent Targets:

Interior Offensive Line

Current Roster:
Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Tyler Steen, Lecitus Smith, Jason Poe

Free Agents:
Jason Kelce (potential retirement, post-June 1 cut), Sua Opeta

Although Kelce has not officially stated that he is retiring, all signs point to him doing so (though we have been down this road before…). Losing Kelce would be a huge blow to the offense and team in numerous ways, both on the field and off. Dickerson has been a good quality guard since becoming a starter in 2021 and is now in the final year of his rookie contact. Getting an extension done with him should be a priority this offseason. Once doing so, the Eagles can feel confident in the left side of their OL moving forward and they can obviously feel confident in their RT, at least going into this season. C and RG are where there are some big question marks.

Jurgens was drafted in 2022 to eventually become Kelce’s replacement. He looked good in the preseason that year before serving as a backup that season. He replaced Isaac Seumalo at RG last season, but he was up-and-down doing so. Meanwhile, Steen, who is penciled in to be a starter as of right now, was a healthy scratch for much of this past season. Even when Jurgens missed six games due to injuries, Steen only started one game. Otherwise, Steen served as a backup behind impending free agent Opeta, who has been nothing more than a serviceable backup with the team since 2020.

Should Kelce officially retire, the pressure is on for Steen. Despite being a third round pick in the 2023 draft, there is no reason to believe the Eagles should just hand Steen a starting job. The Eagles need to improve their depth along the entirety of the offensive line’s interior. They can address these needs in both free agency and the draft. If there is a guard prospect that shows high upside, nothing we have seen from Steen should prevent the team from selecting them. Regardless of how much draft capital the Eagles invest at guard, consider this a darkhorse need for them.

Free Agent Targets:
Sua Opeta, Robert Hunt, Damien Lewis

Defensive Tackle

Current Roster:
Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, Milton Williams, Marlon Tuipulotu, Moro Ojomo, Noah Elliss, Thomas Booker

Free Agents:
Fletcher Cox (potential retirement, post-June 1 cut)

While this looks like a stacked room, I also consider DT a darkhorse need for the Eagles this offseason. Cox was arguably the team’s best DT last season, or at least the most consistent. Carter showed a lot of flash early in the season before going quiet down the stretch of the season. The same can be said for Davis. For the second year now, Davis has shown solid/good play early in the season before suffering an injury in the middle of the season and just disappearing from there. Concerns about conditioning surrounded both Carter and Davis coming out of Georgia and Davis has since admitted that his conditioning has been an issue in his NFL career so far. Williams, meanwhile, has been a solid rotational player, but has been a better run defender thus far in his career than pass rusher.

Overall, there is a lot of potential in the room still, but it would be a leap of faith for the Eagles to trust that everything is going to suddenly click for Carter, Davis, and Williams all at once, especially when none of them have been consistently relied up as starting DTs in the league so far in the careers. I really do think that this group could benefit from a legit pass rushing DT to pair with Carter, while Davis and Williams continue to be relied upon as run defenders with the hope that they develop into good pass rushers.

Bringing back Cox is my ideal scenario. Cox showed that, while he may not be the player he once was during his prime, he is still capable of good play. Additionally, I believe his veteran leadership would lend itself well again to a still young and inexperienced room. Should Cox and the Eagles go their separate ways, be it either to retirement or a contract impasse, I wouldn’t count the Eagles out to be potential big spenders in free agency at this position. I have a difficult time seeing them invest notable draft capital at this position after all of the picks they’ve spent over the last three years to acquire Williams, Davis, and Carter so free agency is the route I would go.

Free Agent Targets:
Fletcher Cox, Christian Wilkins, D.J. Reader

Edge Rusher

Current Roster:
Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat, Nolan Smith, Patrick Johnson, Tarron Jackson

Free Agents:
Brandon Graham (post-June 1 cut)

This is another quiet need for the Eagles this offseason. While Reddick and Sweat make up a great pass rushing duo, they are both in the final year of their respective contracts. Meanwhile, Graham is an impending free agent, as his contract was designed to designate him as a post-June 1 cut this offseason. Graham has stated that he wants to play one last season with the Eagles before retiring and I would love to see him back for the vibes. Vibes aside, he was still solid as a rotational player. Should the Eagles not bring Graham back, then I think they should look once again towards the draft for an edge rusher they can hang their hats on for years to come.

Some fans might groan at the idea of the Eagles spending another high pick on an edge rusher after they just selected Smith (who barely played as a rookie), but this group may be undergoing some significant changes by 2025 and I have a difficult time seeing them spend big on the position in free agency when both Reddick and Sweat are going to be looking for new contracts. This is also why I think they should just bring back Graham if they are aiming for a rotational edge rusher in free agency.

Regarding Reddick and Sweat, if I have to choose which one to extend and which one to let walk in 2025, I would re-sign Sweat, who is the younger player (27 vs 30), is likely going to command less money, and is a homegrown player. While I do believe Reddick is the better player, I’m a bit concerned about how his game will age as he enters his 30s. It’s also worth mentioning that he has gone up against significantly weaker OTs during his time with the Eagles than Sweat has. Don’t rule out the possibility of a Reddick or Sweat trade if the Eagles sign a notable free agent, then invest significant draft capital in a rookie.

Brandon Graham, Josh Uche, Andrew Van Ginkel

Linebacker

Current Roster:
Nakobe Dean, Ben VanSumeren, Brandon Smith, Terrell Lewis

Free Agents:
Zach Cunningham, Nicholas Morrow, Shaq Leonard, Shaun Bradley

The Eagles’ LB is nothing short of dreadful. The only player worth mentioning is Dean, who has barely played through the first two years of his NFL career due to being a backup as a rookie and landing on IR twice in year two with foot injuries. The few games that Dean was on the field for, he didn’t show anything worth mentioning. Still, there were reasons for optimism regarding him during his time at Georgia. He will obviously be in the mix to be a starter again this offseason.

The Eagles have to address this position at least twice this offseason. I think they need to look into acquiring a veteran through free agency, in addition to a rookie through the draft. Ideally, the veteran starts alongside Dean to begin the season, thus allowing a rookie to develop and potentially replace Dean or the veteran in-season or in 2025. I still don’t see the Eagles using their first rounder at the position, but I think LB on day two of the draft is in the conversation if there’s someone worth taking when the Eagles are on the clock.

Free Agent Targets:
Jordyn Brooks, Josey Jewell, Drue Tranquill

Cornerback

Current Roster:
Darius Slay, James Bradberry, Avonte Maddox, Kelee Ringo, Eli Ricks, Josh Jobe, Zech McPhearson, Isaiah Rodgers, Mario Goodrich, Mekhi Garner, Tiawan Mullen

Free Agents:
Bradley Roby

This position group is an absolute headache to project right now. Slay is coming off a season where played mostly solid to good football, but he also underwent a knee scope late in the season. He is currently 33 years old and is under contract through 2025. James Bradberry, meanwhile, is coming off a very rough season after a very good one the year before. He will be entering his age-31 season and is under contract through 2025 as well. The fear is that the age cliff has come for him. Starting slot corner Avonte Maddox is also coming off a disaster season where he missed most of it due to a pec injury after he missed about half of the 2022 season and part of the 2023 offseason dealing with multiple injuries. He is now in the final year of his deal with the team.

Over the next few months, fans and beat writers alike are going to speculate about who, among the starters, should stay or go. Slay is owed too much money to be cut or traded this offseason that it would make no sense for the Eagles to move on from him. Bradberry would make the most sense considering the depth the Eagles have at outside corner vs slot corner, but Bradberry is also owed a lot of money and wouldn’t save the Eagles any amount of cap space by moving on from him either. Maddox would save the Eagles a decent amount of money as a post-June 1 cut, but teams are only allowed two such cuts per season and the Eagles may need to use them on other players on the roster. Additionally, the Eagles have little depth in the slot behind Maddox.

Ringo, Ricks, McPhearson, and Rodgers are worth mentioning as depth players, with Ringo probably having the best shot at becoming a starter, but there are concerns regarding all of them. Ringo barely played as a rookie and, while his stats when targeted look nice, he wasn’t targeted much because opposing QBs were picking on Bradberry instead. Ricks flashed a bit in the preseason, but struggled in-season playing out of position as a slot corner. McPhearson was transitioning to become a slot corner last offseason before suffering a season-ending injury in the preseason. Rodgers is returning from a season-long suspension so who knows what they’ll get out of him. Some seem to think he could potentially replace Maddox in the slot, but he’s played more outside corner in his career this far. He also has experience as a returner on special teams, which could help his odds of making the roster.

Like I said, this group is a headache to try to project forward right now. I think it’s very possible they just swallow their medicine by moving on from Bradberry or Maddox. I also think it’s possible that all three starters return and they bank on them all bouncing back. I have a tough time seeing them be major players in free agency with how much money they already have wrapped up in their starters. Then again, they were reportedly called about trading for Patrick Surtain Jaylon Johnson leading up to last season’s trade deadline so perhaps they dip their toes in free agency or a trade once again. I think acquiring a rookie through the draft is the more likely approach. Rounds one and two should be in play.

L’Jarius Sneed, Amik Robertson, Kristian Fulton

Safety

Current Roster:
Reed Blankenship, Kevin Byard, Sydney Brown, Tristin McCollum

Free Agents:
Justin Evans

Another big need for the Eagles. Blankenship was a solid player in his first season as a starter, but he missed some time due to injuries and played through injuries in many more. Byard was a fine acquisition at the trade deadline, but didn’t make much of an impact. Brown flashed a lot of speed as a rookie, but also showed he has to refine his game still before he can be trusted as a starter. Unfortunately, he tore his ACL a month ago so he is not a lock to be ready for the start of the season.

The Eagles will have a decision to make regarding Byard’s roster status, as they can save a lot of cap space by moving on from him this offseason. However, with only two healthy safeties that are worth mentioning on the roster, I don’t see them making such a move at the moment. If the Eagles spend up on a safety in free agency and Brown is on-track in his recovery, then I can see the Eagles moving on from Byard during training camp or the preseason.

I’ve heard a lot about how important safeties are in Vic Fangio’s scheme so I do think they are going to look to bring in someone reliable that they can build the backend of the defense around in free agency. I wouldn’t rule out a rookie also being added to the mix, but I think the Eagles address the position by bringing in someone with veteran experience to pair with Blankenship or Byard until Brown returns and develops.

Xavier McKinney, Kamren Curl, Jordan Fuller

Specialist

Current Roster:
Jake Elliott

Free Agents:
Braden Mann, Rick Lovato

Elliott is one of the best kickers in the league. Extend him. The Eagles finally got a solid punter in Mann after wasting time with Arryn Siposs, who notably shanked a punt in the super bowl that didn’t amount to anything whatsoever. Just re-sign Mann instead of inviting chaos and, while the Eagles are at it, they should just re-sign long-snapper Lovato to keep the gang all together.

It is wild lol. Thankfully, all they need to do is bring in somebody who is okay with just being a role-player, but is able to step up when need be. Somebody more reliable than Quez lol. I thought that would be Zaccheaus, but they just never gave him the full time WR3 role

As far as I can remember Bell was never on the news for abuse / assault the way Ben and Brown were, he was just a petulant player that overvalued himself and then promptly took a nose dive

so if he wants to and is capable of returning I’m for it. There was a period of time he was extremely fun to watch.
