    there is one way out

Arthur Smith is the most boring pick the Steelers could have made. So pretty on brand, tbh.

(I'm not against it, he's still better than Canada), but we'll see.

Well if the Commanders can't get Ben Johnson, then I'm hoping for Slowik I guess. None of the other options excite me.

Except, one pretends / over ambitiously claims to be fully objective and one doesn’t. I trust my eye test cause I’ve been watching football and researching strategy / film for a long ass time, but I still ultimately concede that everything is an opinion in the end and people have good reasons to dispute what I’m saying a lot of the time.

I am all for analytics and data if someone’s willing to actually be aware of and also question its flaws and shortcomings, but advanced stats are not a thing you can just repost and claim it makes the whole point for you like a lot of people think.

It can make a big chunk of the argument but it can also miss a LOT of cause-and-effect context, and can lead people to draw misleading assumptions and misplace blame while overlooking the actual football-strategy dynamics at play that can skew all the data. Analytics are a piece of the puzzle but it’s not the whole thing.

    The rivalry is back on

There is a place and a necessity for both making data-informed decisions and acting on an uninformed whim in football.

You need both. More information is not a bad thing.

It's no coincidence that the teams that have embraced analytics are doing so well.

Yes, I agree, but to varying degrees

some advanced stats are more explicit about what they mean, and are useful combined with context… some of them are a little more nebulous about what conclusion you should be drawing from them and aren’t any more definitive than just watching what’s happening

what I’d like to oppose is the idea that all numerical metrics are factual and say one definitive thing and account for all the necessary details. Very rarely is that the case in football. But used responsibly, numbers and data can help you tell the story of cause and effect.

My bugaboo is that the average people who use analytics the most don’t realize that in all data science, not just football analytics… questioning, being skeptical of, and constantly re-testing/validating the results to make sure those analytical methods are consistent and robust, is a constant process that happens before people draw any conclusions from any numbers. Skipping that step, you can draw a LOT of wrong conclusions from numbers that don’t say what you thought they said as accurately as you thought.
