I thought it was gonna be lame the first few episodes, the characters and script start out being really basic, but it gets really damn good out of nowhere & each season gets steadily more gripping and intense

I mean, welcome to most major prestige shows. They air a pilot (of which they rewrite half the shit after it gets picked up anyway and entire characters who were supposed to die end up living, etc), then they get a season, and next thing you know its the hottest show on the planet in its 4th season.

Game of Thrones is my favorite example of this. I watched the first episode and stopped because it was a deeply weird show about siblings fucking. Hilariously, I think it was a Scott Weber tweet about Ned and his choices that made me give it another shot, and obviously by S2 and 3 it got way more coherent.

Im rewatching the first season of True Detective, and you almost never get a show this coherent; one writer, same director the entire season, etc. All the good shows need a season of wild inconsistency, like 3-4 seasons of really good shit, and then at least one season where you question why they didnt end it sooner.

I’m mad we still employ Press Taylor and I’m mad Doug keeps blaming the players but the way Baalke handled that press conference puts a lot more blood on his own hands.

I would absolutely not say Doug is a good talent evaluator himself, but for Baalke to take essentially zero accountability and blame it all on the coaching is kinda wild - for a team with a 4th year QB that STILL has no clear WR1 and no actually good offensive linemen.

You complain that your trenches aren’t tough enough but who drafted soft ass linemen Fortner and Ben Bartsch? Lack of strength was the biggest knock on both of them. Who signed Scherff to top guard money on the wrong side of a decline & several injuries? Who signed Cam to top left tackle money when he’s barely better than the guy you drafted more recently? Anton Harrison might be his literal only good move on the OL. Little could’ve been a good move but who knows? He started off great but then we sat him & killed his development because we already overpaid Cam.

Defensively, who essentially put together a 4-3 defense (acquired two good off-ball outside linebackers instead of two good physical inside backers, two EDGE rushers who are more accustomed to playing with a hand in the dirt, handsomely resigned a nose tackle who’s way better at 1 tech penetration and isn’t strong enough to hold the point of attack at 0-tech) for two 3-4 defensive coordinators? And who thought signing not 1, not 2, but THREE average-to-shitty bargain bin interior defensive linemen to fill that huge IDL gap, was the move? Instead of actually acquiring somebody good, and prioritizing the backbone of a 3-4?

I hate that we can’t afford weapons for Trevor cause we’re too busy paying Foley Fatukasi AND Davon Hamilton to both suck at the role of 3-4 nose tackle. And paying top offensive line money to two guys who might not even be top 15 at their positions. (Cam & Scherff). These were obviously not good fits for the kind of money we were spending to begin with, regardless of coaching

Sure, our offense also sucks because of bad playcaling. Sure, our defense also sucked second half of the season because our coverage fell apart. But Baalke complaining the trenches aren’t tough enough and acting like that’s a coaching thing is fucking hilarious when you can’t point to one IDL or one OL who has been better than average so far. At no point until the first round of the 2023 draft has Baalke made a good move to actually turn us into the physical team up front that he claims to want (and that’s if Anton continues his positive trajectory and doesn’t slump or plateau the next two years like Fortner and Little did.)

Let ALONE how unprepared our roster was to take the next step with Trevor after a promising year 2. That’s on Baalke too (but also Doug’s handpicked guys in 2023 didn’t help)

There is a player on the Steelers that seems to impact winning a lot but it’s not Kenny Pickett
