Campbell put Glenn and that defense is a worse spot a couple times.

 

I still can't believe that time out. You absolutely cannot play for an onside kick when you still have other options available to you. Complete malpractice to not have the field goal team ready to run onto the field if you were going to run on third down.

 

I think the Lions offense going to stale hurt them too. The turnover was basically the game imo. So while I agree the defense let them down, the offense played a role too. It was a bad second half as a whole. If we HAD to assign more blame for one side, then blaming the side that gave up 34 is fair.

They gave up the points because Campell essentially gave up the momentum.

Shanahan's staff adjusted at halftime. Campbell's did not.

Also, I think I saw somewhere that Badgley was 80% on FG 40-49 yards. So I would’ve trusted him there.

And I’d guess Campbell was also considering how good the SF offense was clicking the second half and didn’t want to give them the ball back without scoring a TD. I don’t know.

 

I just want to be clear that, my choice of placing the blame on the defensive coordinator has a lot to do with past context and trends.

For example, Jags in 2017, we had a 3 score lead against the Pats in the late third quarter, but I do blame the offense and not the defense in that case. For one thing, we were playing PLAYOFF TOM BRADY, of course he came back. For two, our defense was elite all season and carried a weak turnover prone offense. So in that case yes I blame the offense for not scoring ONE MORE FIELD GOAL to put the game away.

In this case, Lions offense has been STUDLY all year, and they again put up 24 points in half of a game against the 9ers defense. It was the defenses turn to respond and not be as shitty as they've been all year. They failed.

Badgley is 69% on field goals over 40 yards.

When kicking outside he is 65% on field goals over 40 yards.

When kicking outside and not at Denver he is 61% on field goals of over 40 yards.

On 4th and 3 or less this season Detroit is 18 of 21 (86%)...

An 86% versus a 61% chance

this is why I just don’t get the criticism. It makes sense. He’s not gonna trust him in that moment.

 

1/1 in that range this year, his long for this entire season was 41 (although he's only kicked 4 field goals this season, and had missed 2 XPs this year

-yes the refs fucked the Jags
-yes the Jags still should've won

Some of the most slanted playoff referee-ing of all time by Blakeman and his crew, but that STILL doesn't excuse the loss, we STILL shoulda won. We had that game put away if we made ONE more big play.

I really think that 3rd down run that forced the wasted timeout is the only big thing to criticize Campbell (or maybe really Johnson) for. I understand thinking Montgomery could pull it off but the second we saw the offense lined up against the defense it felt obvious that a run play would be stuffed and at the very least Campbell/Johnson should've at least had the offense ready to check out of the run if that were the plan, if not have the offense go up with a pass play with the option to check into a run

 

Its almost like "vibes" can only get you so far.
