Seems pretty evil/bad to me. I mean, if they fired him, then they must have been open to the idea of not having him back beforehand, which begs the question…why block him from interviewing with another team?

I’m sure David Tepper and his squad had good intentions though

  3. We very clearly waited for the new HC to be named and allowed him to make decisions on the staff. Some guys will be kept. Some won’t. That decision couldn’t be made until now. Which is why we didn’t let him interview. And why we blocked Evero’s DC interview requests. The team didn’t know how it would exactly play out, but Tabor is a valued ST coach and they wanted to keep him as an option.

There isn’t a lot to it. But because of Tepper’s past actions he’ll be held in a different light. It’s deserved. I get it. But what happened here is something you can likely find across the league.

Again, I’m well aware that this is a frequent occurrence throughout the league. I’m just pointing out that it’s really shitty and not a good look. Every team does shitty things with interviews and hires! The Eagles do it and are doing it now! I just felt inclined to share what’s going on with the Panthers because it caught my eye. That’s all. I know why it’s happening. Doesn’t make it any less worse.

I imagine he watches the game in a completely different head space than most people. Dude prob doesn’t wanna sit with anyone

  11. I still disagree that “it’s really shitty” though. Yes, it sucks for Tabor. But that doesn’t make the action shitty.

What if one, two, of the other HC candidates we interviewed wanted Tabor to stay? And let’s say we end up hiring one of them because we couldn’t get a deal with Canales. That guy is going to walk in and wonder why the ST coach that they wanted, and we had under contract, isn’t there.

And we’re also talking about a coach that was close with Tepper specifically. It is likely Tepper preferred to keep him but actually let his new HC make the call.

Twist it however you want. But there wasn’t anything sinister about this.

You keep spinning it from your favorite team’s perspective: “What if some other HC we hired wanted to keep him?” “Tepper wanted to give Canales the choice”

What about what Tabor wants? Dude went from special teams coordinator to interim head coach in the middle of the season and they reward him by blocking him from interviewing with another team and firing him after hiring Canales. That sucks dude.

And, lastly, what have the Panthers done during Tepper’s entire run with the team that should give them the benefit of the doubt in this situation?

  13. Yes, it can be spun either direction. Which is just proof we don’t know how these things actually play out and what is said behind the scenes. You can assume Tepper is evil and every decision he makes is evil. I can be a biased fan.

Yes, I can and will assume that billionaire owner David Tepper is evil

  15. Tepper meddles and makes decisions for his coaches, bad.

Tepper waits and lets his coach make his own decisions, bad.

  17. When we hired Reich, both Tabor and Campen were retained by the suggestion of Tepper. And either Reich agreed or was overruled if he didn’t want them. They stayed. This time around, they were both kept around until we hired someone. One could make the assumption that Tepper was once again suggesting they be retained. And clearly, Canales didn’t want that. And this time, they were let go.

“What does Tabor want?” I don’t know. Maybe he wanted to stay in Carolina. Maybe he is indeed mad he didn’t get to interview with the Giants. Who knows. But he was under contract with the Panthers, he’s a valuable ST coach, and there was a chance we’d retain him. That’s what happened.

I apologize for derailing the thread.

Outside of being an outstanding coach with recent success in doing exactly what we need, Jerrod Johnson would close the deal on an entirely black coaching leadership for the Patriots, which would be kinda cool.

  23. It’s funny how we assign credit for a QB’s success. This isn’t a post to discredit Jerrod, Slowik, Canales, whoever. But Slowik is a hot HC name because of “the work he did with Stroud”. Same for Jerrod and an OC job.

I’ve been doing the same talking myself into Canales. I’ve assigned credit for “his work” with Geno and Baker despite him having two different job titles for each QB.

How do we know who was actually important for the QB’s successful seasons?

It’s a fair question. I will say, though, that I think it’s a feather in the cap for Canales who got good play out of Geno in 2022 and competent play out of Baker last season as opposed to what Slowik and Jerrod did with a QB who was in the conversation for the first overall pick.

Not to take away from what Slowik and Jerrod did with Stroud, but I think it’s fair to assume that Stroud made their jobs easier than Geno and Baker did Canales’

Me personally? I read about it on Twitter and form my opinions. Ideally Mayo has a better method.
