I almost posted it in the nba thread a bit ago and then I almost posted it in the politics thread but ultimately didn't so here we go I guess

I don't want to be a downer but the increase in gambling/online sports betting/whatever kind of legit freaks me out, on like a societal level

like within 10 years are we going to see a crazy increase in suicide rates, divorces, bankruptcies, etc? obviously gambling in some form has been around for thousands of years and i'm probably being a big ole pessimist, but it feels SO overwhelming

it’s definitely overwhelming and just leading us more and more into a dystopian future. the way in which it’s been normalized and it’s half of every sports show/pre game show is terrifying.

 

I gamble so maybe I’m the wrong mf to say anything but it’s more alarming to see it advertised consistently during sporting events like NFL games or MMA/Boxing. But I also gamble like $5 or $10 at a time. I see people bettings thousands and it gives me a panic attack

yeah for me the crazy thing is how IN YOUR FACE and engrained it is in everything now. live odds during games, prop bets everywhere you look, commercials, ads, its insane. you cannot escape it without completely shutting yourself off from the internet and sports broadcasts.

 

I’m concerned about gambling addiction and how upfront companies are with it as much as I am alcohol addiction. As someone who has gotten sober, it’s alarming how normalized consuming copious amounts of alcohol is in our society, just like it’s just as alarming to see all these companies keep pushing gambling on our society.

 

yeah I remember a tweet 5 or 6 years ago that was like "if alcohol was a brand new thing today it would be outlawed so fast" and I agreed at the time but not so sure anymore

 

For me personally, the rise in sports betting just takes fun sports things that are a good mix of casually strategic and luck based (fantasy sports, NCAA brackets, sports predictions, etc) and makes it wildly not fun (the system is set up so that you lose more than you win) and no longer strategic unless you’re doing even more incredibly unfun and not casual things like setting up betting portfolios where you hedge bets
