At the end of the day it likely doesn't matter cuz it's either Flacco or Mayfield, but it feels like a really weird list yeah

 

1500+ all purpose yards and 9 TDs coming back from an ACL tear misses the list because Baker Mayfield sucked last season

I really like the Canales hire. Obviously there is some bias there, but watching him be a part of basically anything good to happen to Seattle's offense over the past decade has made me a big fan.

If the Jets were less of a disappointment it might be a story. Honestly there was awhile earlier in the year that he was in Saleh’s doghouse for “not running hard enough” (see: being wildly misused outside of his skillset because Saleh was trying to make an example of him and prove a point to the rest of the team) and that had an impact on his stats, he could’ve had a more dominant year

Trying to turn bad PR into good PR. Oldest trick in the book. “He almost died playing this sport” becomes “wow what a miracle” and takes the attention off “this sport is too negligent and dangerous”

not really, he contributed/is contributing about as much as you’d expect out of a late round rookie/now second year player

It’s entirely that he almost died and is now playing football again the next year, which is an enormous accomplishment that doesn’t feel comparable in any way to any other candidate for that award. IMO it should be acknowledged and celebrated separately from that award since that’s not really the spirit of CPOY, but I don’t know how you’d be that guy who voted for someone else for that award — everyone else going from hurt to good very much pales in comparison to the Hamlin story

 

For what it's worth Steichen wasn't a finalist for COTY either which felt weird to me. Not that I can make an argument that any of the 5 nominated SHOULDN'T be there, but I expected Steichen to at least get a nod

Saleh rightfully called him out because he was trying to bounce every run for the first half of the season.

He was never in the doghouse. He just needed some motivation and it worked. One of the few wins for Saleh in 2023.
