Real talk though, extending a player works how extending a player works. It’s not “offering him less money”, players often walk into their contract year knowing it’s not realistic they’ll actually receive that much salary and that it’s an unguaranteed technicality that doesn’t actually represent the contract value

it’s the last year of the contract that’s inflated, not the next contract that’s undervalued. Dink is arguing against something that’s actually just standard and happens all the time

 

You'll note that you said line, not left tackle. In terms of percentage of pressures allowed per dropback, Charles Leno accounted for the 8th fewest among left tackles. The interior line is horrendous only Russell Wilson was worse at avoiding pressure than Sam Howell.

We’re acting like it’s dumb with zero precedent. a team having two decent but no great left tackles is a rare situation, and teams needing a tackle but not holding the right cards to draft one high / no good ones being on the FA market is a common situation.
