    A) that wasnt a real thing, that was a joke
    B) we've had 2 shithead hardasses the last 2 times in Gase and Flores, and lost. So this is something different.

i don’t see it that way, I think it was a proper answer to a very weirdly pointed question.

Deebo Samuel is doing something that basically no other WR does and that no one saw him doing when he was drafted. I get that some positions, coaches will have a general “ideal prototype” for. But its ridiculous to assume teams have strict or rigid molds for the kind of players they want and can’t be flexible, especially when you’re taking about a very rare skill. Having one kind of skillset before doesnt mean they have to target it again to succeed. Sometimes that stuff is adapted on the fly based on what you see in somebody in practice.

like “do you need a Deebo” is a weird question because the 49ers didn’t even know Deebo was Deebo, or that they needed a receiver who is also a great change-of-pace back, until his first couple carries in the backfield went way better than expected. I bet it was a lot simpler than that - they just wanted a guy who can produce yards with the ball in his hands / after the catch. The whole scouting community was expecting Deebo to be a “solid WR2” that you throw to over the middle and underneath. But it surprised everyone including his own team when Deebo exploded this year and was THAT good at it to the point he can take handoffs.

I think McDaniel is right that setting expectations beforehand and passing on any playmaker who doesn’t exactly fit that mold would be a really weird draft strategy, you don’t draft players based on comparisons, you draft them based on having their own things they bring to the table. Ultra specific things like “having a Deebo” usually happen serendipitously. If I’m Miami I don’t pass on Burks because he’s not a Deebo or try to force him to be a Deebo… I rely on McDaniel’s ingenuity to figure out what Burks does best and work THAT into his offense. That’s how Deebo became Deebo.

It’s kinda like how everyone knew CMC was gonna be good but no one realized just how ridiculous of a pass catcher he would be. Like, I don’t know that anyone expected him to have two 100 catch seasons and one of them 1000 yards, it’s not like people compared him to Marshall Faulk as a prospect. It just sort of naturally happened and started becoming more of the gameplan because no one was stopping it. Meanwhile, Rivera telling the media Antonio Gibson was the “new CMC” just put too much pressure on him to try to handle an extremely unique and hard to imitate role. WFT was better when they realized no one else is CMC, and Gibson played better when McKissic took passing down snaps. I feel like trying to have a “new Deebo” would be like that.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they’re going in a different direction as far as personality after how things went with Gase and Flores. I think that’s the right thing to do. I just think the dry, witty humor (which I mostly enjoy from him) is going to wear out its welcome if they aren’t putting together at least eight or nine wins

He was asked a question like this shortly after he was hired and he just leaned into his camera and yelled “WADDLE, WADDLE, START HIM IN FANTASY” and I thought it was very cringe

  14. With Penning, is cleaning up his penalties something that's "fixable" or is it a trait like QB accuracy that is what it is?

I was told that Josh Allen was once inaccurate

  17. Josh Allen is an extreme outlier on that tho lol

It's fixable. It's not often that it gets fixed but it's not often people are that undisciplined and still that good. Garrett Bolles is his only peer in that regard.

I am of the belief that players can get better at just about anything just as much as they can suck at just about anything, which is why I don’t get myself worked up over the draft because the reality is most of these players aren’t going to pan out so whatever

Fans and analysts laughed at the Chargers for drafting Justin Herbert because people were clinging to comparisons of him to Josh Allen. As it turns out, they are two of the best QBs in the league right now

Too many people in football circles care way too much about firing off snarky hot takes instead of genuinely acknowledging that players are actually allowed to develop and get better

    Kenny Pickett 8.5'' hands ooof

I try not to get too crazy analyzing those things but thats really bad

  23. I don't disagree with this, but I will still say Allen's development was pretty unprecedented and should not be used as some sort of proof or as an example that those issues can be fixed with any QB. It's very rare to see a guy be woefully inaccurate and then suddenly become a top 5 QB in the league.

  24. Same size as Michael Vick and he did just fine

EDIT: oh your edit said that lol
