    The rivalry is back on

I like this Barnwell take (AKA this has been what I’ve been saying about him all year)

    Nope. Supporter

Correct, Mahomes signed his extension after his 3rd season, so I'm sure most QB's who have moderate+ success will all be looking at that playbook

I get that but Mahomes had won an mvp and a super bowl by the end of his third season. If I were a gm I’d have a hard time conceding anyone with some success should get what Mahomes got.
Again though I think without knowing what Murray is asking for it’s hard to say whether he’s being unreasonable or not.

But do we know that Kyler is looking for an extension now? My understanding is his camp is just trying to start having that discussion and they haven’t heard back yet

Which, again, still a weird statement to release from his camp but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Kyler starting those conversations with them

  7. Whether someone is worth whatever dollar amount is irrelevant. When it's his turn he will probably get paid a lot of money because that's what happens.

Nothing wrong with tanking for a season and drafting a rookie QB early in 2023 unless a legit veteran suddenly becomes available (Russ?)

but why release the statement at all? Why give fans the sense that your commitment to the team is *already* conditional? This is strongly worded in a way that you’d expect if he was in a contract year.

I don’t know about you but to me it sounds like his agent is trying to sell high on him lol. Like, this seems like “hey let’s pressure Arizona to sign you now while your stock is as high as it is, so they can’t reduce your offer if you struggle a bit this season.” I’m not gonna sit here and say Kyler hasn’t had a great start to his career… but I am gonna say he could certainly hit a slump now that the Rams really exposed how to make him play poorly.

That team is in his division and isn’t going anywhere, Kyler’s still gonna have to get through them to win in the playoffs. Not to mention the 49ers and Seahawks will try to mimic their defensive game plan to fuck with Kyler also, cause that’s what teams do, they see what works against a guy and then they work it into their gameplan

not gonna re-hash my thoughts on deliberately tanking being a wildly overrated and oftentimes much more harmful than helpful strategy in the NFL (also Irsay wants to win this year so that wouldn’t fly)

but I will say that the Wentz contract has an out with $0 dead cap after this year, so he’s effectively on a 1 year contract anyways and that keeps you flexible to make a move for an actual upgrade as soon as it presents itself

I don’t disagree with any of this. If I’m the Cardinals, I don’t give him an extension until after year four, at least, but I don’t fault Kyler and his camp for reaching out now. Players should always be looking to get paid sooner rather than later considering how short their careers usually are.

Honestly, I’m surprised all of this is even happening all because of one report calling his leadership into question, but, then again, I really shouldn’t be surprised.

Yeah, we are never seeing a top tier QB sign for less than $40mil/yr ever again. Unless they are doing the Brady-take-less-to-win move

He has one year left at ~$11mil, but, then the 5th year option is the QB franchise tag level money, so, really its only this season that the Cards wouldnt be paying him top QB money, so its really more of a future commitment (or knowing he's getting out) than about money purely

That Stafford deal was a bargain. Too bad it paid off for another team.

Idk, if your Kyler's agent seeing Wentz, Goff, Tanny and Watson on there feels like a pretty favorable comp.

i mean, not when you consider all those extensions went very sour and that’s going to influence teams to try not to make the same mistake

Also, presuming the Cardinals pick up his 5th year option (a virtual lock), thats a guaranteed $30+ million for 2023. The presumed tag number for 2022 is $28.5mil, I gotta imagine it jumps into the $31-32mil range for 2023. And they dont get any of the cap benefits of spreading a ton of money out on signing bonus...meaning keeping guys like Hopkins/Baker/etc gets trickier

Lol I don't think teams learn nearly as much from the mistakes of others as you may think.

i get why it seems like an obvious thing to say but I think it actually does mean something specific. Most players more so confirm their draft hype rather than increasing it at the combine. I think when you say a player has a chance to really increase their stock, like by entire rounds, then that tells me one of two things of their skillset:

    1) they have a raw skillset and their primary appeal is their athleticism - teams will not value them unless they can prove they have truly ELITE explosiveness

    2) or, the inverse - they have a very well trained and intelligent skillset but there’s questions about how fast they are on tape, if they test above average suddenly they become a priority draft target for some teams

either way it suggests the player has questions and them being a valued prospect entirely hinges on how well they compare to other players athletically. A player who has well rounded tape is probably not going to increase their draft stock with a good combine… and is also not that likely to decrease their draft stock either unless their combine is truly bottom tier

  25. I don't think this matters. If it's your turn, you get paid.
