I think the problem with viewing the average draft position of safeties doesn’t exactly factor in how the position has changed, or how differently it’s been valued, in more recent seasons than earlier ones. I know barely any safeties get drafted in the first round still, but I think it’s more important to look at schemes when determining the importance of safeties.

Last season, the Eagles had replacement level safeties starting last season and Jonathan Gannon was regularly playing them so deep that they didn’t have much of an impact at all. Of course, they also made a run for Marcus Williams in free agency this year so perhaps Gannon didn’t deploy his safeties closer to the action because he knew none of them were particularly good.

Considering Gannon’s scheme is designed to limit big plays in the passing game in zone coverage, I would think he needs good safeties to help prevent said big plays, which is why the Eagles were in play for Williams in free agency. Organizationally, though, Howie Roseman doesn’t value safeties highly (nor does he value linebackers), which is why the fit with Gannon has always been a bit odd.

That’s why I think the argument about “Which position is least important” is so fruitless because it varies depending on scheme. Someone can say defensive tackle, but that’s an important position in Gannon’s scheme for the Eagles.

On the other hand, I don’t think corner is as important of a position for Gannon’s scheme because of how much zone coverage he calls. With that said, the Eagles obviously had Darius Slay and Avonte Maddox in house so he’s going to adjust to who he has. I think the signing of James Bradberry was to help fortify the secondary because, even if he doesn’t value the position as highly, the safeties aren’t exactly good so they need good players at corner to make up for it.

Just some thoughts for right now.
