you cannot run an effective Tampa 2 or cover 3 with average safeties. Madden might convince you that you can, but in real life you can’t haha. Much like how, while nose tackle might not be important to some schemes, because even average ones are fine in a 4-3… without an excellent nose tackle, your 3-4 defense is just bad run defense lol

The least important position is SAM linebacker actually. It’s a position that’s on the field even less than your DTs and it’s a position that has the smallest responsibility in terms of both run fits and coverage. When people say you can get decent linebackers late in the draft / as UDFAs, typically it’s the SAM linebacker position.

Some late round SAMs develop into quality MIKE’s but for the most part you don’t need the premium athleticism of a WILL or the premium instincts of a MIKE to play SAM. You just have to be strong and follow your assignment, not much adaptation required… just block shedding and tackling technique, and depending on the scheme you might be responsible for 2-3-4 of the routes that tight ends and runningbacks run, and that’s about it

People need to start looking at roles as positions. all 3 linebacker spots (all 4 in a 3-4) require entirely different skillsets. Comparing a SAM to a WILL to a 3-4 OLB is pointless cause they all necessarily have to be good at different things

 

Like, just saying they’re all linebackers is like saying “they’re all offensive linemen”. Well sure but that doesn’t mean they can just do each other’s jobs. They are each important for different reasons

 

Positions and roles are two different things. We're talking about positions in general. Obviously we could get much more specific but that also changes the parameters of the discussion. Yeah SAM is the least valuable role for LBs and easiest to replace if We're pivoting that direction though

 

Sure, but I think that speaks more to the quality of that DT’s skillset than the position itself. High level nose tackles are valuable as far pass rushing DTs. Obviously, those that execute well against the run and rush the passer well are very valuable

I don’t have the exact numbers in front of me from when I last looked during one of the many RBs are worthless arguments, but the average draft position of a starting NFL safety is shockingly low, and definitely the lowest on the defense, and I don’t remember how it compared to guard overall but those were the two lowest. The Colts have been rolling with late day 2/day 3 draftees at safety since Bob Sanders and it’s done them fine thus far. (The only ones that actively sucked were the Grigson FA overpays)

couple that with the safety market buckling on a yearly basis for the non-elite, fairly young players (Whitehead went 2/$14.5, Woods went 3/$15, etc), it’s a relatively invaluable position from a roster management perspective

 

I know this is a subjective lens rather than any factual way of looking at this topic, but I kinda perceive it like, “good safety” is such a rare/demanding skillset that yeah, some drafts there might not be ANY sure thing at safety, while other drafts after the best 2-3 are gone it’s not worth drafting another till round 4. So that has felt to me to be the reason why it’s typically drafted low on average.

I think it’s the nature of the beast that a lot of teams have to settle for at least one middling to subpar safety… and those are the teams that get lit UP by Rodgers, Wilson, Mahomes, Herbert etc every season.
