Yep, not to mention they were two of the glaringly obvious moves they could make in order to create more cap space.

Marshon Lattinore is likely next, people will spin the same narrative, and then realize they will still need to clear about $35m or so just so they can sign their rookie class lol

People are comparing it to 2013 and saying Jordan Love would be QB1 lol.

Yeah I hear this every year about the saints and every year they bring back a loaded team. I’ll believe in their cap hell when I see it.

I think they’re just disappointed there probably won’t be a big qb trade

Using data from Over the Cap, my guess at what the Saints do is something like this:

    Restructure:
Marshon Lattimore - would save about $18.5m
Alvin Kamara - would save about $7.8m

    Extend:
Marcus Davenport - would save about $6.8m

    Cut:
Bradley Roby - would save about $9.5m

    Post June 1st Cut:
Malcolm Jenkins - would save about $7.75m
Demario Davis - would save about $7.5m

I feel that roster is in a state of decay and they're about to lose Armstead and Marcus Williams as well I presume due to poor cap management

They'll have a handful of their good players and really need to hit on their drafts

They should probably still compete for their division though

I’m sure the Saints are stoked about restructuring the contract of a 29-year-old WR who has barely played football in the last two years

Thomas is better receiver than Cooks has ever been, but now I’m wondering why they ever decided to trade Cooks, especially because they’ve been spending years trying to find a WR2 to pair with Thomas

Thomas hated him, as a rookie he constantly talked shit to him on twitter until he got traded

Maybe the Saints don’t end up extending Marcus Davenport. I forgot they spent their first round pick last year on Payton Turner. I have no clue if he contributed or how he looked, but I imagine they’ll want to get him on the field as a starter eventually

Yep, just not a great situation for the Saints to be in where they are losing quality young and veteran players!

Also people are praising Mickey Loomis rn but the Saints are still fucked y’all lol, they like actually can’t afford a QB right now.

It would be smarter for Loomis to blow up the roster than to try to cling to it if he doesn’t want to be in that 7 win purgatory. Instead he’s out here literally guaranteeing $18M MORE dollars to a guy who’s been hurt for like 30 games and who is just gonna get wasted with no one good to throw him the ball

I feel like this is vaguely known but not explicitly understood by some of the people in here who hate math - restructuring a contract doesn’t hide the money into crevices of a contract that don’t affect the cap. It’s not like a legal loophole where they manipulate it to “not count”. It just adds more dead money you can’t get rid of to later years and shrinks your cap even further just to give you superficial cap space now. It’s not a technicality you can use to AVOID the cap like how rich people hide income offshore to avoid taxes; it’s more like taking out a line of credit. The cap is 10,000 percent real - some GMs put off their debt longer than others but that makes things worse and worse when the crows finally come calling.

Loomis legitimately is not only postponing the inevitable but he’s also making it a lot worse, and making the Saints rebuild probably one of the most “trap” coaching jobs out there - like legit a David Culley scapegoat situation

Yep, The idea of constant restructuring is certainly not to be praised

    It's a crutch
