I honestly have been having an inner dilemma about this. Like it’s kinda sad to me that I wanna virtue signal and talk about how “this should be the thing that makes the NFL lose money and audience” - but then I had to catch myself; cause I so far hadn’t planned to skip this Jags season, so I’m obviously not contributing to that.

we can all sit around and justify it “oh my team didn’t do anything THAT bad” but the real question I have in my head is like, how much league-wide atrocity am I willing to tolerate just for the nostalgia and mental stimulation of following the Jaguars? They aren’t even a good team and I’m still this committed. It’s kinda crazy how much cognitive dissonance is involved with following an NFL team, and how even as I say this, I’m still looking forward to watching Trevor play next week.

It’s just like, I’ve been doing this for 27 years. It feels wrong to keep ignoring the garbage and just pretend I’m watching it with the same innocent “fun” perspective as I did when I was a kid… that is not and has never been the way the league actually is. It’s not “just a sport”, it affects so many people.

The Washington Football Team stuff ALONE makes me feel like I should’ve stopped watching awhile ago. Hell, the way the NFL discarded / gaslighted the CTE crisis. The way it fails to counteract its role in exploitation of poor black communities. The way it takes taxpayer money and gives it to developers for things that will not benefit taxpayers. Way before we even get to Deshaun Watson there’s loads of reasons. Tyreek Hill is famous as fuck. Ben Roethlisberger will be in the Hall of Fame. Peyton Manning IS in the Hall of Fame.

But at the same time, there’s a flip side to, “I’ve been doing this for 27 years.” Even at 32 with much bigger priorities, even knowing what I know about the league… football is usually how I tap out of important stressful depressing real life and just focus on something that’s all meaningless action. It’s a habit / dorky hyper-fixation hobby for me and I really like that habit. I like my Sundays, I like having epiphanies where I learn something new about a team’s strategic approach, I love all that shit.

The side of me that just wants to enjoy life, and stop being so uptight / trying to fight every battle, still can’t fathom stopping watching NOW. Not when I waited my whole life for this team to draft a quarterback prospect who could even touch Trevor Lawrence. Imagine if Trevor blew up next year and I stopped watching right before that. Go figure. I know it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things but it’s like never watching the final season of your favorite TV show. Even if Weinstein directed it you’re gonna see how it ends. it just sucks and I am still considering tapping out and focusing a lot more on my other hobbies despite this.

 

This whole appeal process … how long normally does it take? I just don’t want some nonsense of it going back and fourth and he somehow still gets to play after 6 games because the league couldn’t figure their shit out in time.
